What do you think about this rose?

This is a DA Mary Rose bought about about 3 months ago.

Over the last 2 days and particularly last night in the rain most of the bottom half of the bush has de leafed .The branches seem dark and discoloured.

The top half is green with lots of buds???

Do you think there is dieback here or should I not worry.

Here is a photo of the bud union with all the darkened branches,esp on the left side of the lower part of the bush and lack of leaves.

Help!!

michelle...i can't tell from thr photo...ok.....keep in mind when roses go dormant they go to sleep from the bottom up-....ie:...they will de-foliate below...first...it could be that....or....if it has de-foliated suddenly...the leaves have gone dry and crispy?...maybe some have purply blotches over them?....maybe purply blotches on the stick parts that carry the leaves?....if thats the case it's more likely to be a fungal disease called downy mildew...you see it a lot around now and around october or so.....if any of this rings bell.....keep in mind you'll be prunning soon anyway...so your not really trying to save foliage or flowers....if it was on the leaves only...i'd prob say leave it alone....if it's on the stems....i'd prob advise to give the rose a good hair cut....and if poss cut the "blotchy" areas away and spray with...hmmm.....mancozeb plus 2-3 times at seven day intervals.....hope thats of help

Thankyou Brenton a very helpful reply.I didnt know that roses go dormant from the bottom up. In that case I wont worry it sounds like a natural process.

Thanks for your comments folks. I totally agree that the whole premise is flawed since there isn't even one rose that we all on GW would agree would fit in everyone's garden. We have too many climates, or conditions, or preferences, or color schemes, to make this kind of blanket statement anything but hype. I'm with Seil - I recognize this as hype and it's no more egregious lying than any other marketing. "Best minivan for the price, "Low calorie ice cream", "Tastes great, less filling"... they're all seriously flawed statements, and arguably something we wouldn't even want (if I indulge in ice cream, I want the full glory and decadent taste, not a pale substitute). As Michael commented, marketers inherently serve their own interests, which is why I got a kick out of road signs up to Yellowstone this year like "Cody cattlewomen urge you to eat more beef". No bones (pardon the pun) about why they're recommending that strategy, and the same is true of J&P. I guess my curiosity about this list was more - are these arguably "very good" roses and relatively desirable among the roses J&P sells, or just whatever they have extras of this year and are trying to market to us. No way to know the latter, of course, but it's encouraging to hear for instance that Radiant Perfume does actually have a fantastic scent and seem to be a good rose. I can accept that Moondance or Sedona could be good roses just not in my yard, and I'm still hoping the latter works out for me. I have heard the mixed reviews on Zephrine Drouhin and dithered about it for years, but there aren't many thornless climbers and I do have enough cold that she might be happy. I agree that the quality of J&P roses has declined so much lately that they're my last choice of a vendor if a given rose is available anywhere else, but there still are a few roses only they sell for now. I do think and rethink and reorganize and replant.... But the thing that made me laugh was your "with the world going to hell in a hand basket".... That's exactly why my gardens look so good this year, it's the only thing that I can control in these crazy times....

Carol-Thanks for another vote for the Duchesse. I'm in North Idaho in between farmland. The zone 4 roses do well but the Zone 5ers get pretty well nipped. Today the wind is mercilessly whipping the rose canes. They look like the car lot inflatable dancing balloon guys. Fortunately only one of my roses grow tall enough to greet me in the face. Mariannese has a grafted DdRohan, I may not have that option. I'm not sure where I will settle on buying one, or if I'll even be able to snatch up Duchesse PinkWonderfulness this time around; she's one of 3 that I wanted badly also, worse now ! My order for RdViolettes and DdDrReynaud are paid ahead for 2018 at Joy Creek, and I requested DPWRohan be added to my order if any came into stock. Think I'll keep checking off and on to see. She's carried at Rogue Valley and Burlington too, just in case you know anyone ? that might want to snatch one. I woke up at 12:30 AM and couldn't go back to sleep until after 4 thinking of how to make the Flower bed bigger.

cool....understand though...that when things go wrong with roses it is usually simple things...and these simple probs tend to repeat themselves each and every year.....the main thing that will change is your knowledge in reconizing probs and thus solving them....when you learn to drive a car...the car is what teaches you to drive it........drop the clutch..probs...etc etc.....people can tell you what to do but it can only ever be the car that will teach you....roses are exactly the same...though the process is a lot slower....give it a year or two....listen to the odd so called "expert"(good luck)....and once armed with a bit of info....the rose will ALWAYS teach you and tell you whats up...you just have to learn to read the signs!.....having said all that.....yes...roses go dormant from the bum up...but...i would take a wild stab in the dark and think more along the lines of downy mildew.........i would suggest that most growers when confronted with something theyare not sure off....be it novice or "expert".......the general procedure is to give it a trim...a feed...and keep the water up to it.....this time of year it's usually the water (humidity) thats working against you (fungal disease)...but i hope you get my drift.
