It won't take over your yard because it's not hardy. I grew it for several years and after most winters a lot of cane had to be pruned off. Some years it would reach 5' at most. Other years it would send out a couple long canes but mostly short canes. Terrible growth habit, at least for me.

But the flowers are gorgeous. Just not a good candidate for a climber.

In zone 5-6 our choices for climbers are limited due to cane hardiness. Whatever you choose, you can keep it in line with regular pruning after blooming.

I would look for another climber that is more generous with flowers and more cane hardy. If you have thrips be prepared that Eden's flowers are favorite of thrips - that makes those gorgeous flowers look awful many times.

It is an easy rose to keep neat, and the flowers are gorgeous, if scentless. The question is: how cane hardy is it going to be for you in UT.

Most modern climbers are reasonably easy to control. For example: 'Fourth Of July', 'Eden', 'Altissimo', 'Berries n Cream', 'Compassion', and, yes, 'Eden' can all be kept tidy with moderate effort.

It's the old ramblers from the early 20th century, the Noisettes of the 19th century, species (wild) roses, and the Wichurana hybrids like 'New Dawn' that are the rampant ones.

In zone 5/6, size won't be so much of a problem as it is in say Florida or Southern California. The problem you have to handle is winter die-off.

I have 2 red edens and 1 pink eden and they are all thriving in my zone 5 garden..The pink is on an oblisk and is about 6 feet in May and the red is on a trellis and is over 8 feet in MAY..So they can be grown in your zone..Mulch mulch mulch in the fall..

Okay... someone (many) did tell you it's not a good choice for zone5... :)

If you like it so much, try it in a decorative portable pot as a bush that you can put someplace with protection overwinter.

That is a good question hoovb, I am not positive about how hardy it is here. I have seen pictures of it growing very well in my area, but am not sure how it would do in my particular garden. The fact that welltraveled can grow it in michigan gives me new hope though lol.

In Utah we are fortunate that we do not have as many problems with insects or disease that they have elsewhere.

I have White Eden which is just a sport of the original Eden, so it's virtually the same aside from being white and it had zero dieback in Columbus. I always throw in a reminder that I live in Columbus near downtown, so I don't get the brutal winds people get in the country. Eden and White Eden do take a while to establish though. In the 1st year, white eden only gave me 2 blooms and barely even grew. So far this year, it's had a flurry of blooms and is currently throwing out some substantial new canes.
