I planted my pierre last winter and its only just now that it has started to take off. It seemd to take longer to get going than my other roses so maybe it needs more time. Mine gets sun most of the day though. If you want to move it you can do it in winter when the plant is dormant.

Thanks Kazla I think I will move it as you suggested.It is only about 8 mths old and a move should help it along.

I have 2 of these plants growing up verandah posts on the eastern side of the house (6 years now), and both have done spectacularly well in both stem growth and flowering, especially after feeding. I seem to recall they were a bit slow the first year, but then took off like crazy...now I have to trim them back several times a year otherwise I have extra branches going every which way! And rather than flower only once a year, they seem to have one great flush then quite numerous "spot" flowerings the rest of the time.

It can be a bit particular as I've tried it in two seperate gardens with mixed results. I've found it's more suited to full sunlight however if there is a place you can shelter it a little it will benefit the blooms that can ball with too much water/rain. In my new place I've put three on posts and all of them have at least one stem 3m now in only their first year. I think I've hit the lucky country with great soil and moisture. I have also found with this rose it throws out more canes than are needed if your using it as a climber so unfortunately, as Ashke has done, I remove some of the canes....

Thankyou for your replies. It seems that it is a "late bloomer". As it is not even a year old yet, I think I will take your advise and be patient.It seems that it needs a year to settle so I will wait ,feed it and see what happens.

I have some cuttings of this rose I took last winter,that I wanted for myself, and they have grown so well. One in the ground where it has sun and then shade, and also in pots in the shade house. I also put a grafted one else where in my garden last Spring which is doing alright, espacially as I accidently broke one of its good canes. I reckon now I will start comparing their growth.

Like Ashke, mine has done extremely well, but it was a weel grown, well cared for plant to start with. It has borne heaps of gorgeous flowers, with a bit of balling occasionally, that I can easily forgive.
My only problem with it is that I have just realised that it will not clime like Gloire de Dijon, Crepuscule, and Sombrieul, which share the arbour. I may have to move it in winter. I hope it continues to do as well after moving.
It grows in an area where the soil is heavy clay and moist most of the year without watering. (Over the septic drainiage bed)
I have planted another one to grow up the almond tree. It is already growing and blooming - planted 2 weeks ago.
Both get plenty of sun.

How is your Gloire Sparaxis?

It has raced to the top of the (very tall) pergola - both sides. I am wondering if I should have woven it back and forth to get bloom along the stem? At leaset we will get a good view of the top from our new upstairs - LOL.
I am thinking of moving Pierre to an obelisk, and Albert to a wider arbour. I will need two of something to replace them - in keeping with Sombrieul and Gloire. Perhaps a soft pink? I feel that Pierre is too different in shape to the others to look right on the same arbour.

Here's my PdR looking out of my kitchen sink window ... really make washing up a pleasure. Pierre stretches a whole 4 feet more to the left of the picture shot and when she's covered in full bloom in spring ... the back fence is a sheet of confectionary pink and shite. The back neighbours are welcome to pick any that go over the fenceline!
