SHAW FLOORING A FOOL'S ERRAND

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING FROM SHAW FLOORING! Well, it seems every floor, wall-to-wall carpet and area rug or runner in my house was made by Shaw and all are discontinued within the last 5 years! Not only that, our manufactured hardwood called Olde Mill Maple, Sunset Splendor, is scratched sometimes to the underlying raw wood and I found out today I can't find even one box anyplace for repairs!! Originally I bought 3 nice traditional (Oriental) runners and a very large area rug that matches from Bed, Bath & Beyond's website. When I decided on a 4th runner only a couple of months later, they were discontinued. Thinking this was a fluke I went to Georgia Carpets and bought 2 rooms of wall-to-wall for 2 bedrooms and before I'd even paid for it on my Visa bill I learned it was being discontinued! Meanwhile we had already purchased about 600 sq. ft. of Olde Mill Maple manufactured hardwood for a large part of the house... It has held up like garbage and I learned today I can't even find a few boxes to repair the worst spots! This flooring was over $10,000. and I am just stunned! PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING FROM SHAW FLOORING!

I can't comment on the quality of your flooring, but as I understand it, most flooring materials - tile, vinyl, carpeting, engineered hardwood - are only marketed for a couple of years before being discontinued, so this wouldn't be unique to Shaw.

I guess that's so we morons will have to completely re-do everything constantly. My cousin just gave up on an old refrigerator that was owned by our grandmother and used when we were little in the 1960's-- and the fridge was old then! They wouldn't sell many refrigerators (or other items!) if they weren't actually pieces of crap that won't last...

My parents downsized for the 4th time and their latest house has LVP. It looks nice in their house and they picked a medium brown tone, so not a trendy color. Their last 2 houses had tile and houses before that had hardwood. I built last year and installed engineered wood floors through most of the house. I kept an open mind and did take a look at LVP when doing my research, but I didn't like the look and my DH hated how they sounded when he walked on large sample areas installed in the flooring showrooms. These days you are seeing the LVP being installed in higher end homes here in FL and buyers seem to accept it just fine, specially closer to the beaches. A couple of years ago I had started seeing the ceramic core floors with a wood veneer in Los Angeles, specially for mid/high end flips.

Floorman here 40 years experience professional installer First. You have a bigger leak under floor if it buckling. Sound to me you would be better to have vinyl plank installed instead of wood. If you want a professional job it will cost you $10 plus for wood and labor no furniture. Labor alone is $5 in Missouri. The cheap hardwood is all going to be soft easy to scratch. Vinyl plank would be cheaper. Labor is $1.50 to $2.00 sq ft. Its glue down or it can be loose laid if you buy that type. If a peace gets scratched easier to replaced even for DIY but that peace will have to be glued. Vinyl plank looks like real wood now days. Water won’t hurt it as long as not a major leak. If your on concrete for wood or vinyl a moisture test should be taken first to see if there’s any hydrostatic pressure if there is it shouldn’t lay either one would have to fix problem first. With vinyl plank if it is glued you might need 1/4” underlayment on sub floor. But loose snap in vinyl plank you shouldn’t need underlayment. If your floor is wavy so will the vinyl plank look. Just my advice.

Yup that is it, Trinity Tile and the stock number I have on my receipts is SP031. Give Padron a call, they’re in SE Florida but they might ship over there. I know they’re a very popular tile store and work with interior designers all over Florida so it’s worth a shot. Thanks everyone!!! I will try to answer all of the questions. 1. We've been here nearly 2 years now. So we've uncovered the issues, etc... 2. The neighborhood is AMAZING. Our house was very cheap. But most of our neighbor's homes are much larger than ours and sell for twice what we paid (most homes are going for 270-340,000). A tornado hit our neighborhood last year (first one in over 20 years), and the homes that were damaged/destroyed are getting built back much larger and fancier, so property values may go up even higher. The location is also very good in terms of being near a mall, a park, and other amenities. 3. JuneKnow and Patricia, I would take a sketch to the architect of how I'd like the house to work and flow. Obviously, I'd still work with the architect and listen and would have a working relationship (that was my major in college, but after a few years I had to stop to care for a sick relative, but I know a little bit about how it works). My second choice (actually my first) would be to build an addition in the front of the house (on the top part of the slope). This addition would be around 16'x24' (2 story) and would house the entrance, stairs to the basement and to a second floor master, and a formal living room. Then I'd remove the stairs from the middle of my now living room/dining combo, and be able to get an open family room, kitchen combo. I just can't shake the feeling that I am being wasteful by not using the 1000sq ft of already built space that my house is sitting on. But, at least there would be no need to build a second garage. The only other "con" is that I'd still have a crappy, sloping yard. But I guess I could build a huge deck to compensate. It's just that option seems a lot more expensive and I am trying to do the most cost-effective remodel. Ps. GN Builders, the house looks lovely!! That's very much what I was thinking! But I thought it would be more expensive than working with the existing basement! Here's a sketch of what option 2 might look like. And this would be a "split". Not as high as the current house, as the ground is lower, by about 4 feet (there's a deck to enter the home).

Do you think the hardwood can be refinished? The tremendous amount of scratching in your photo (ignoring the wear through for just a moment) would indicate you have animals. Is this in a "pivot point" area (like around a corner or just in front of the door where dogs might "spin" when excited to go out)?

Yes, we have dogs. But the place we ordered it from assured us it would be just fine; that it was practically indestructible! What a lie. Plus there are light scratches all over the floor. I don't think this type of floor can be refinished, but maybe I am wrong. That would be nice.

Sigh...more "salesman hype" hits again. The "indestructible" products are stone, concrete and packed earth (yes there is a floor product made out of dirt). For wood products, the FINISHES take all the abuse. That means the finish is the thing that needs to be looked at. An aluminum oxide finish is the toughest finish we have. And to ensure it must be "super tough" there needs to be at least 9 layers of AO urethane finish applied.

If your floor is 5 years old, then I would say this is a traditional urethane product. Aluminum Oxide shows WHITE when it scratches. Your floors are showing indents in the finish where the dog's nails are creating groves. This is normal for urethane but abnormal for Aluminum Oxide.

I'm sorry you don't like your floor. I'm sorry the sales person put a spin on it that has not materialized. You can look to see if your floor can be refinished. The top layer of wood needs to be 3mm thick. You can check that at a floor vent. Simply get down on hands and knees and measure the thickness of the top layer.

A wood flooring professional (NWFA Certified of course) can then tell you how easy (or not) it would be to refinish the floors you have. And to ensure you have the toughest finish, you will need to ensure the professional uses TOP OF THE LINE products from Loba (Loba 2K Supra AT) or from Bona (Bona Traffic HD).
