need help on outdated exterior look...
Comments (20)I thought I recognized this as a PNW home. I'm in Oregon. I'd be all over that landscaping in a heartbeat, but I'm a gardener. It's not uncommon to see older homes that haven't updated their landscaping. Your landscaping probably looks like everyone else's on your street. The one thing you should stop doing is shearing and pruning all of your evergreens and let the foliage grow back. That large evergreen, for instance, is a beautiful graceful tree when not sheared off at human height. I would paint the siding since that beige is dated with its pinky/yellow/tan undertone. There's no relationship to that color and the brick. Without that undertone in the siding, you could paint the door and shutters a dark gray-blue that pulls from the dark bricks. If you have a Codel Door dealer nearby, go look at their Flint color. They're made in Washington. I saw their doors at Parr Lumber....See Morewhat should I do with this outdated stone fireplace?
Comments (7)Agree with all above. Beams are great but maybe lightening up the colors of the beams or possibly changing the colors on your walls. Would definitely consider Sina's suggestions of a good cleaning on the stones and that should help. Maybe afterwards adding flat stones or simple slab on the hearth will help too. Good luck....See MoreOutdated exterior- how do I update this stone wall?
Comments (1)I don't think you can update stone... It is a bit of melting pot of styles, isn't it? The roof seems to go with the stone, but neither of those things go with the rest of the house. The star needs to go and you need a new light. Different paint would do a lot, but I would see about removing the stone and adding wood...I doubt you could match the brick, and I think wood would be a better choice anyway...something like the vertical panels on this house......See MoreDoes light paint make a house look outdated?
Comments (19)how could a light wall color be dated? I think you're looking at it paired w/your oak trim. To me, that's what's dated (especially the fluted wood trim and sqaure pieces around your window. sorry, but unless you live in a 1915 craftsman or victorian, those are dated ) Paint it. better yet, replace it and paint that. I don't care what anyone says, that 1980's, early 90's builder basic wood trim just is not nice looking. This stuff. It's builder basic and isn't even decent wood. (maybe yours is, but the majority of them are not) It's more trouble to sand, prime and paint, so I'd just remove this and get more up-to-date looking window and door casing, and the higher baseboards. at least 5" on those. You see this door trim and baseboards? I painted my walls w/White Dove and had to repaint because it looked so dingy. Your light is obviously brighter than mine! I repainted with Simply White (cabs are about the same color) All the crown/baseboard is also Simply White. (in a semi gloss. walls are eggshell) You said you like the warmth of wood. You have the beautiful wood floors and the wood furniture. You don't need that 80's trim on the window or baseboards! bring in a nice vintage walnut console or something. (that wall could use some art. Or, better yet, how about doing a beam on those ceilings? Diff ways and styles to do it, and here's just a quick shot of what I mean, but it could add a lot of interest if you're doing white walls. This is Studio McGee. I love this room. Does it look dated? It's all white. (forget the white she used. swiss coffee at 75% I believe) look at her white trim, the wood accents, the warm elements, the ceiling beam. (you can DIY that faux beam if you like) This one too. Lots of white, lots of wood elements....See MoreZalco/bring back Sophie!
