Flooring Kitchens Design Dilemma

Ok to mix hardwoods on first floor?

We live in a 1927 house that has natural stained red oak floors in the living room and dining room. We are remodeling the adjacent kitchen and wondering if we can go with a darker hardwood for the floor, like red oak in a darker stain. Or should we just try to match the hardwoods in the living room for the new kitchen (even though they don’t look as good next to the new cabinets). See the 2 floors in the picture- this is how the transition between rooms would look.

Match the older floors. However, if there's some overwhelming reason not to (for example, a wood species that's not available any more), a traditional method is to use a patterned border of light and dark wood between the two rooms. One flooring will look better. Can you refinish the existing floors to match new floors. A flooring specialist should be able to find wood planks to work with your older floors.

I love that floor. I have seen travertine and wood mixed together like in the picture and really, really like it. I love to go into a house and find the unexpected (in a good way) Have you thought about stained concrete, you could get the look of the two tone flooring, like in your picture. I don't know if you are on slab or not, but it would be less expensive. What color is the wood and travertine in the picture?

Go ahead and ask. And just to be CLEAR: Moisture readings START with DELIVERY! A sheet (usually a "fill in the blank" type of sheet they made themselves) will be filled out on the day the shipment arrives. The "flooring guy" will have his meter in hand and will test random boards (roughly 5% - 10% of the flooring). To this page s/he will also include weather, temp. and humidity and SUBFLOOR moisture as well). A sheet like this will be present each and every time the moisture readings are done. In your situation, there should be three or four sets of these. One for delivery. One done about a month later (around about the project is to start). One for the FIRST date of install. And *possibly one for mid-install if it is a BIG project that takes place over a week or so. The minimum is 3 sets. The ORIGINAL set of papers belong to YOU (actually it belongs with the flooring = belongs to you). The installer will keep the COPIES...for his own use should something go wrong. If the "flooring guy" isn't there at time of delivery and isn't standing there with a clip board, then the moisture readings aren't happening as per 'Best Practices'. You might want to call and confirm the 'guy's' process on this. If he sounds vague over the phone or doesn't understand your question re: moisture testing, you may want to investigate him a bit further.

Not sure why it cut me off there. What I was trying to say is… I think looks-wise I feel comfortable with different brands, but I am not sure if they would be compatible physically, if that makes sense. Thank you for any advice!
