Comments (8)YOU CAN RUN FEEDS OF 14/2 (1 15 AMP CIRCUIT), 14/3 (2 15 AMP CIRCUITS), 12/2 (ONE 20 AMP CIRCUIT), AND 12/3 (2 20 AMP CIRCUITS). FROM THE NEW SERVICE PANEL TO THE FUSE PANEL. BE CAREFUL TO MATCH TO THE OLD WIRE SIZE 14 GAUGE, 12 GAUGE ETC. USING 12/3 AND 14/3 JUST SAVES BOX FILL AND CLEANER, LESS LABOR THAN RUNNING 2 SEPARATE 14 OR 12/2 CABLES. BUT IF YOU USE 14/3 OR 12/3 YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW A SHARED NEUTRAL CIRCUIT WORKS, BLACK AND RED WIRES TO DIFFERENT BUS BAR OF THE PANEL. ONE OLD CIRCUIT TO THE BLACK, AND ONE OLD CIRCUIT TO THE RED, WITH BOTH OF THE OLD WHITES CONNECTED TO THE WHITE OF THE 12/3 OR 14/3. OR JUST RUN 14/2 OR 12/2 FOR EACH CIRCUIT CONNECTING BLACK TO BLACK, WHITE TO WHITE. THE FUSE BOX CAN BE A JUNCTION BOX BUT YOU WILL NEED TO TURN THE COVER INTO AN ACCESSIBLE BUT NOT SWINGING OPEN (USUALLY SCREW THE HINGED COVER SHUT. THIS IS DIFFICULT TYPING IN CAPS, WHY ARE WE ALL SHOUTING?...See MorePacific Central Electrical Box
Comments (13)One of the times that I really was an opportunist was the case where a highly intoxicated fellow was watching a Saturday ballgame on TV. The non-tamp fuse (Type S) failed for some unknown reason. In his stupor, he thought that only part of the fuse was in his hand and attacked what he thought was the rest of it (in the panel) with hammer and screwdriver. On Monday, he soberly wrote a big check for his newly-installed breaker panel. I have a Trico remover for those Type S adapters that does remove them without damage to the panel. Had a case where a homeowner mistakenly believed that if 15 amps was good, 30 was twice as good. So he had personally installed, in good faith, 30 amp non-tamp adapters in every plug fuse holder in his panel. I changed all of them to the proper type for the conductor size. Caution: The very last of the residential fuse-type panels would accept only Type S fuses, but the fuseholders had no adapter inserts. Attempting to change them will destroy them....See MoreOld fuse box in kitchen
Comments (8)If there is no live wire coming into the box, it can be removed and drywall end over as Annie suggested. A few years ago we upgraded our electrical service from 200 to 400 amps and there was some discussion about moving the panel, which was located in the laundry room. We decided to leave it in place and just put the second one next to it, but if we had moved it they would have taken out the box so the wall could be repaired. Perhaps there is still a live connection to your old box? I would ask the electrician this first. If he doesn't know or give a definitive answer you can have your electric utility send out someone to check. They would have had to inspect the work before the connection was changed....See MoreSource Media Solutions
