OT Qults I Made for Christmas Gifts
Comments (9)Hi ngraham, thanks you so much. I just started quilting last January, but I have sewn for years. Nancy, the new sewing machine made the quilting so much more fun. ..and much easier. Jean, you shouldn't forget a quilt! Thanks Julia, the pink and green fairy quilt went through several greens before I was happy...which mean I have a nice supply of green in my stash. Celeste, the artist in you shows in your garden. I, too, have painted, and always loved to draw, so the blocks in the ladybug quilt were a lot of fun to design. I hope the little one who got it loves it, since she loves ladybugs, it's a good bet that she will. I am in the process of designing and quilting an owl quilt which my Daughter-in-law is law has called dibs on, but I am making it for a grand-daughter, so being in the family is no guarantee of getting the one you want. It is much more involved that the ladybug quilt, and I doubt I have it in me to make two of them. kay...See MoreWhat is best way to give total strangers Christmas gifts?
Comments (16)A few ways we've found to help. If there's a Ronald McDonald House in your area, they generally have a program for volunteers to make and donate dinners for the families who are staying there, so they can be near their children in the hospital. I bet your local baby AIDS hospice could use some extra help. One Christmas we contacted the director for the ages of each of the children there--we bought each one an outfit, a toy, and made each a stocking. These poor babies not only were born with a potential death sentence but most have been abandoned by their families. Rather than giving to random strangers, you no doubt KNOW someone who really needs help--in this economy, it's not hard to find a family where the parents have lost their jobs, or who has medical problems that have depleted their savings, or a senior citizen who has been widowed and is not not just struggling financially but lonely as well. Buy a couple of gift cards (things like the grocery store, Target, Walmart, etc where you can buy assorted things--food, outerwear, OTC meds, etc), and drop them in the mail 'from a friend'. I personally don't do good deeds for the 'thank you'--I prefer to do those thing anonymously, so your concern about that wouldn't figure into my plans. If you do decide to give to an organized charity, the Salvation Army uses a very high percentage of the money they take in for their good work, and much less than others for operating costs and salaries. However, DH and I generally try to give directly to those we encounter who definitely need a little help. This year we know a young couple where one partner has had several health issues and as a result, lost their job, the other can't cover all their expenses with their salary. They're very, very proud people, though, and don't want to ask or receive help. It's a challenge to think of a way to help them, without them feeling hurt....See MoreWhat was your best Christmas gift ever?
Comments (11)Well, my answer sounds very shallow after squirrel's response. About five years ago, after I had already given DH my "list" and I knew he had probably already done his shopping, I came across a sapphire (my birthstone) and diamond ring in a store that I just looooved. I was with a friend who was shopping for something and I wasn't hunting for a ring, but had always wanted one. Well, I tried the ring on, drooled over it, and the salesperson was ever-so-helpful and wrote the info about the ring on a business card and said, "Give this to your husband -- you never know!" I held onto the card for a few days thinking, no, this would be too greedy... well, finally I gave DH the card and told him I was in love with this ring but I knew he'd probably already shopped, maybe it could be a gift for a future holiday, etc. Also, the ring cost more than what we usually would spend on Christmas gifts so I didn't expect it. But on Christmas morning, the ring was at the very bottom of my stocking! It was extra special because after many years together, DH isn't the type of guy who surprises me, but that was a fabulous surprise! I still wear the ring almost every day....See Morei got the best xmas gift ever!
Comments (4)Another great thing is that I brought my 1984 Kodak Instamatic camera with me. When I left Lewis it was the end of the semester and all the faculty were gone. I never got pictures of anyone. But i took LOTS of photos at the party. Can't wait to get the film developed! SamKaren your resident DJ...See MoreLisa Adams
