Onyx Collection vs Cultured Marble for Vanity Tops?
Comments (4)Interesting, I too am considering one of these cultured marble or onyx vanity tops. But they puzzle me. At my work they redid the ladies rooms a few years ago. One got laminate, others what I believe is cultured granite. I thought it was some sort of shiny corian (or similar) at first, then came across a display in Home Depot made by US Marble that looks identical. The reason I'm considering it is how well it's held up with dozens of people using it every day. It really does look nice. The laminate top on the other hand is totally de-laminating. (Not that I was considering that...just saying) I'm puzzled because it appears to be a plastic impregnated with marble dust and the underside is unfinished. In my old MBR we have what I always called a "cultured marble" vanity/sink top. Mine is almost like china. Like a bathtub. Only beige swirled white 'marble'. It's glazed on both sides. If you open the cabinet you see a smooth porcelain-like sink bottom. Not so with these other cultured marble sinks at work and in HD? They look like foam blown into a mold underneath. Or resin. Have they changed how cultured marble is made over the years? Was it different decades ago? The 2 materials seem totally different. Or did they make total china vanity tops with integrated sinks years ago? Also, my home counter is very cold to the touch. The work/HD counters are warm, like plastic. Any thoughts?...See Morehas anyone ever put their litterbox in the bathtub??
Comments (22)Yes, we do this as well. Have the litter box in the unused bathtub. It has worked great as the cat sometimes pees over the side and this keeps it from getting on rug or floor and the tub can easily be cleaned. We have not had problems with the tub drain yet. (We were at our last house for three years using flushable Swheat Scoop.) Great to just scoop the dirty litter into the nearby toilet and flush. However, we recently moved and I am developing some concerns about this system. 1. Our cat is old and seems to be experiencing some weakness in the hing legs and I am curious how hard it is for him to go in and out of the tub and am concerning some sort of step or ramp on the outside to help him out. Does anyone have any suggestions? 2. This tub was not well installed (or something) and the drain is not the lowest point. This is leading to water collecting in the low spot and it has rusted a little. Since the cat sometimes pees over the edge this can be pretty gross. Is there some kind of coating or something I could stick on the bottom of the tub to raise the low spot?...See MoreOnyx Collection Gloss vs Matte.
Comments (16)I agree. We have the countertop and its scratched and looks okay. Out shower is matte finish and it looks nice, but the base is hard to keep clean. Their customer service was not hiw i would treat people. Still waiing for Victor to call from 2 years ago to let me know when they are in the area lol Hope you find something that works...See MoreHas anyone ever canned in recycled commercial jars?
Comments (5)Yes, I can with "recycled" jars, as long as a ring and flat will fit. That includes some old Miracle Whip jars, spaghetti sauce jars, marshmallow creme used to come in a glass jar that a wide mouthed lid will fit on. Even the Center for Home Food Preservation says you can use such jars. Here's what they say: "Most commercial pint- and quart-size mayonnaise or salad dressing jars may be used with new two-piece lids for canning acid foods. However, you should expect more seal failures and jar breakage. These jars have a narrower sealing surface and are tempered less than Mason jars, and may be weakened by repeated contact with metal spoons or knives used in dispensing mayonnaise or salad dressing. Seemingly insignificant scratches in glass may cause cracking and breakage while processing jars in a canner. Mayonnaise-type jars are not recommended for use with foods to be processed in a pressure canner because of excessive jar breakage. Other commercial jars with mouths that cannot be sealed with two-piece canning lids are not recommended for use in canning any food at home." I do only use them for water bath canning, as I've found that I get a lot more breakage with those jars in a pressure canner and the loss of product negates any savings I might get from re-using those jars, plus causes a mess and wastes my good produce. As for the plastic yogurt/cottage cheese type containers for dehydrated items, I don't think that's nearly as good an idea. First, they are not air tight, they do not actually "seal" like a jar does, so your items could be exposed to more humid conditions, like in the kitchen, and become "soggy". Second, they are not clear and so you couldn't see the contents, which would be a problem for me, I wouldn't want to search for the label in the middle of cooking something that used dried leeks or peppers or garlic.
