Navy stair carpet??!!
Been looking to replace my staircase carpet for a while but cannot make a decision. Strongly considering this Nylon navy but unsure about the effect of dark carpet on the stairs. It's a medium size 2-story foyer with lots of light. I have wood in the landing so it's just the stairs.
Both living room to the left and den to the right have navy tones.
I have used a navy and taupe blankets in the attached photos to get an idea but still unsure.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Comments (36)Take a look at SW Restrained Gold and Blonde. Those are nice honey golds without being too brassy. Glidden Water Chestnut is also nice with blue. As for the stone, it may work with a new paint color, but if not go neutral with it and let that be the accent wall. You don't want to have competing focal points. The carpet is such a striking color that you may not need an accent wall though. Perhaps just a nice large piece of art or some really dynamic fabric. I would definitely paint the woodwork and paint the adjoining dining area the same color. You can set a nice tablescape with colorful place settings for some pizzazz. Comments (10)Sigh....carpets hide HORRIBLE surfaces. And you've just discovered another place where this is true - the stairs. *In THEORY (ahem....too much work for most professionals - they would skip over to a surface and be done with it), you can TRIM OFF the slight overlap nose on every single tread to create a perfect 90 deg angle for each riser/tread combo. Then you need to STRIP AND SAND down the white material SITTING on the wood. Please check for lead based paint if the house was built before 1978. (If there is LEAD....move on to full removal/replacement of the tread/risers and leave well enough alone.) Once the wood is PERFECTLY CLEAN (and that means free of the chemical STRIPPER you used to remove the white ?paint?), you can then go ahead and putty all the little staple holes and cracks, etc. Then you sand again. This thing should be as smooth as an Ice Rink! Now you are ready to glue down the vinyl and the nosing. Shouldn't take more than a week. Or you source IDENTICAL thickness wood (pressure treated for this purpose) and remove and replace each and every riser and tread. Be aware....as soon as you TOUCH these things, you need to bring the whole thing up to code. Move ONE piece and you need the whole thing to code. And code means "Finishing Carpenter" level of mastery....and legal everything that goes with the title. If you do this, you might as well have them deal with the banister, etc and have everything moved up to code at the same time - no sense in waiting. If you simply resurface the treads with new carpet, you get away from all of this. If you can resurface using the original material, you should be able to keep everything else as-is. As soon as you remove stuff, and "rebuild" then you are getting into so serious code issues. Personally, I would throw down a stunning carpet that compliments the LVT and leave well enough alone. Make it look handsome by using a runner and then fixing/painting out the treads/risers in a pretty way....but it will involve a huge amount of work. Good luck. Lots of light? Forget all about blue. Blue, is the least stable dye on earth. It will fade to a hideous greenish blue in short order.........showing every speck of sock lint and dust in the process. Your best bet? A tightly woven natural fiber sisal. Nothing forgives more or holds up better on stairs.

5 years agoWhy not something not so solid color for a bit of statement on the stairs .I think this would look good with the carpet in the next space and I for one cannot see sisal there at all.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI think easy peasy and darn bullet proof too. There are zillions of tones and textures. Look at the two together. Also VERY accepting of any future style change in the living room, in virtually any color palette. Neutral in this material is NOT the same as "builder fuzz" on a stair lol
In fact, what is on the stair now appears a safety hazard!!!

5 years agoI love dark on stairs. Here is mine. It does have to be vacuumed with my fur babies, but I love it. Mine is a charcoal .
