Kitchens Remodeling Design Dilemma

where to stop my backsplash?

Where do I stop my backsplash? Do I make It flush to the overhang and go all the way to the ceiling, or do i stop It at the upper cabinet end?

Same thing with second picture. We are going to put up floating shelves, so I go all the way to the door frame, or end where cabinet ends?

There are different camps on this subject. I am in the camp that the backsplash should stop in line with the wall cabinet. To me it looks weird to continue it on. Once you get things on the counters and stools under the overhang, it looks fine. Same thing on other side.

agreed, i am also 'team orange'. that tiled corner sticking out by the blue arrow always seems very raw to me.

Absolutely! Set the box aside and really explore the possibilities. One thing, a kitchen with a strongly contrasting band of bright "cream/whatever" slicing between large dark surfaces is going to be a very different one from a kitchen with a darker, richer harmonizing combination. Gorgeous as the pictures posted are, don't choose your tile before you choose your look. BTW, if you need more than natural light in a kitchen, don't expect to get much third-hand from whatever some tile will bounce back. Plan on needing to turn on your lights in any case.

I had a situation like yours. In the case where the uppers extended slightly further than did the counter top, the tile installer made the tile even with the edge of the upper cabinet and added a very narrow line (maybe 1/2", slightly rounded edge) of tile all the way to the floor on the outside of the lowers. I thought it looked great. Sorry, I have no photos. In the case where the counters were wider than uppers, he lined up the tile with the edge of the uppers and the tile went straight down to the counters, so the last 1/2", or so, had no tile above it. Because of the shape of the edge, this looked intentional.

I am really not understanding the description for using the 1/4 round. I've never seen that done as a casing around a window before. But hey, you might start a new trend! ;-) The photo showed the 1/4 trim going down to the counter, so I did this one first. Sorry if I'm totally off on what you are describing. :-p I think your description sounded more like this? My concern is still with the left strip of tile between the window and door. I think that mayflowers is right on. The wall area surrounding the door is the odd ball. What is the plan for the left wall under upper cabinets? I think the backsplash there should tie in with the window wall backsplash. When looking at the whole picture, somehow it just doesn't feel cohesive to me. I really think the marble to the ceiling is messing things up, imho. I still vote to keep it simple and do the 3" SS splash on both walls with marble just behind range. Paint above the 3" splash will tie both walls together.

Where/how stop kitchen backsplash if wall continues into dining?

You could stop the wall tile in a straight line that is just short of the edge of the counter - so the countertop extends just beyond it like an overhang (1.25"...). You can run one strip of the same tile vertical and have the angled pieces die into that - or use something like a Schluter profile (metal band) to end the tiles.

The purpose of a back splash is to protect the wall from cooking/mixing splatters. It also has the benefit of being easy to clean.

So, if you'll be mixing stuff on the peninsula area that could splash and splatter, take the back splash to the edge and/or to the top. If not, make it flush with the cabinets. If you won't be mixing on the peninsula, I'd take it to the cabinet edge. It really depends on how you use your kitchen and what your aesthetic preference is.

If you take it to the edge, I really like the idea of adding shelves:

There are so many ways of doing a backsplash. For your kitchen, it looks like the best way is going to be to the bottom of the cabinets and to the very edge of the cabinets. You don't need to go past that. You can see in our image below we did, but you don't have to.
