Early freeze - Cut back now or wait?

First freeze was in November and my oleander, lantana, some salvia, copper canyon daisy have freeze damage. Usually, this doesn't happen until a little later in the season so I'm not sure if I should cut them back now or not. Mom says to wait until February because the damaged parts help insulate the undamaged parts and cutting back can cause the plant to start new growth which will then also freeze and possibly stunt the plant. On the other hand, it looks bad.

So what do you do? My next door neighbor was cutting back his plants and thought he would do me a favor and come into my yard and cut back some of mine. I was pretty miffed but tried to look at it in the spirit it was done.
