Comments (6)Hi Predicted to drop into the low 40's here tonight and like you I'm never prepared because the usual fight is heat lol Last major cold spell was 09 actually dropped to hard freeze for 4 hours set record lows for daytime highs Funny, the first year I arrived here 78 it snowed!!! all the way into Miami lol AS I remember that was a 60/70 year record and it has not happened since lol Went to visit my daughter in Kansas and I chose May to avoid the cold . Was snowing when we arrived . broke a 80/100 year record. Think I could single handedly stop global warming lol. Anyway good luck everybody!! gary...See Moredo you order from Heirloom, I did????
Comments (48)I can't believe this thread is still going, I posted this in January. January is our time to plant roses so that is why I do not order in the fall. We plant in January and prune in January, there is no harm in planting in the fall but it has to be late, late fall, it does not cool down here until the end of October. Anyway an update on the above Heirloom roses I ordered. I went ahead and planted all of them in containers. It is very hot here right now 110F, I have to water them everyday. My Heirloom roses are doing fine. In March I went ahead and planted 2 of them in my big rose bed, Brandy and Royal Highness they had grown quite well in the containers so I thought they would do ok in the rose bed and they are doing fine. The others I left in the containers. I did have one problem which was a bummer I lost Champagne, gosh is was a pretty rose. I did call Heirloom and they told me they would replace it this fall so that made me happy. I can plant it into the ground when it gets here because I am sure it will be around November by the time it gets here and our weather will be just perfect. In the temps that we have here in the Arizona desert I am lucky I only lost one. I never have lost a bareroot rose one I purchased in a container that is planted in January because of the heat, but these little babies have to be watched closely in my climate. Comments (18)I received the two roses from Heirloom today. They were shipped on Monday and I received on Thursday via UPS. I’m very impressed with the way they packed the roses. Both roses are well developed for own root roses. If they find a way to sell all the gorgeous cabbage roses from Europe and Japan, I will sure to buy them all. Comments (22)Beth, I got on the bare root 'bandwagon,' when they became ascendant in the rose trade some years back. I bought the sales pitch about all the assets of own root over grafted. Of my current 60 odd rose bushes, only 3 are grafted. These three are two Pope John Paul II, and Parade Day....all pretty new. I would prefer own roots simply because I can get liners (slowly becoming less and less available these days...have you noticed?), so inexpensively. But as I am slowly finding out, not all bare root roses thrive and perform at their best in colder zones like mine, especially hybrid teas. Therefore, I plan to exercise better judgement in the future, and shoot for grafted, preferably on multiflora, instead of own root. This shift will take time, going over to grafted hybrid teas....which class I am 'stuck on,' today. I am still putting in own root roses, but if I find a variety I like that struggles here own root, I plan to replace it with a grafted version. The first candidates are my own root Julia Childs. They do reasonably well, but the 'freckle canker,' moderate/mild, yearly winter damage that the white pithed, green, after pruning canes have, I know holds them back from performing better. This phenomenon, switching to hybrid teas mostly, is quite surprising, especially to me, since up until about 10 yrs. ago I considered hybrid teas ho-hum, clones of each other, just in different colors. Even a troglodyte like me can change. Moses...See MoreVaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley
