I have never personally heard of chicken foot cactus, but when I google chicken foot cactus I see it’s most likely some type of Rhipsalis or Hatoria. Somebody on Davesgarden suggeseed Rhipsalis micrantha, but imo that plant doesn’t look like it deserves the common name chicken foot cactus. Then there’s Hatoria silcornioides which looks more like a chicken foot imo;).

Other possibilities- Rhipsalis burchellii, Rhipsalis teres, and Rhipsalis baccifera. Those are three you could check out. Hopefully somebody else has heard of chicken foot cactus so you can get a definitive answer;).

Isn’t H. silcornioides drunkards bones? I think that could be the winner, but from the sound of Shenue’s description of what chicken foot cactus looked like it sounds more like R. teres. Who knows;)? That’s the trouble with common names it could be any Rhipsalis because they all start to look like a chicken’s foot after awhile;).

Maria Elena once said a bare rooted Adenium obesum looks like a running chicken, and they totally do;).!

Kara, IIRC, it's 'Drunkard's Dream'. I also have never heard of CFC, but at least it's quite imaginatively name, speaking of which, I imagine you're right - some sort of Hatiora / Rhipsalis / Rhipsalidopsis.

Rhipsalis salicornioides, I guess? I see the ‘silcornioides’ spelling in both threads, but it must be a typo. Something to do with the booze in the little bottles? ;-)

How funny I thought Hatiora salicornioides was called drunkards bones because the segments look crooked like how a drunks bones would look after one too many falls;). I wish I was joking, but I really did think that;).

Oh my goodness, thanks for all of the posts. I am going to check out every one of the suggestions! I did a search recently and got zero hits. Hmmm must have done something wrong. My husband swears computers and other electronics just do not like me. We will sit side by side and do the exact same things on our computers and he will get positive results and...well...me...not so much. lol

@Kara You are absolutely correct. They do all start looking like chicken feet. :-) I have been sitting here for a couple hours looking at pictures of all kinds of Rhipsalis. Part of the problem too is so many of the pics must be misnamed. I see the same pictures named as different Rhipsalis. My brain is starting to hurt. lol However, I may have it narrowed down now...…...maybe. After a break (to rest my brain) I will start looking at pictures again. :-)

Rhipsalis are very cool plants (but then all tropical cactus are, aren't they?). I don't know how many there are, and I've only grown the chicken foot cactus (I agree, an excellent common name that should be adopted by ICZN immediately) species, but I hope you get to collect them all, Shenue, and recreate the dryish-sometimes jungle for them. BTW, most cactus which have been in cultivation for a while often have several names - Rhipsalis is one of them, and as you've seen, there are several others.

You are so right about the confusion with the different rhipsalis. Another thing is that they can look very different under changing conditions. I bought my first R. salicornioides as a little upright plant, looking a bit like a bush of coral. The segments were short and fat. When I brought it home, it must have gotten less light than it had before, for the segments became longer and thinner, looking like bottles for the first time.

@cactusmcharris Which Rhipsalis is it that you have that you identify as the 'chicken foot cactus'?

The description made me think of various Senecios, something like S. articulatus or kleiniiformis.

I did a search on the Senecios. It isn't either one of them.

I have decided to go with the Rhipsalis burchelli. It is on ebay. Of course with so many of the Rhipsalis misnamed, I'm not sure if what I am getting is truly a R Burchelli or one of the other Rhipsalis. The picture looks the closest to what I remember that cactus looking like that I saw so many years ago, identified as the 'Chicken foot cactus'. So that's what I'm going for. :-) Thank you all for the input.
