Oh I really like them, they remind of the Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs that we see on barns in Lancaster, PA. I have lots of bed quilts but I've never heard of barn quilts.

Now there's a project for you Susan - don't you have a nice barn that needs a little perking up for spring? And then when all your neighbors see them they'll be asking for one for their barn and before you know it all of the barns in the Poconos will be sporting different quilt paterns.

I have a very nice 2 story, cedar sided detached garage that we painted barn red that would look really spiffy with a Lone Star or Bear Paw quilt pattern hanging on the front. When are you going to start? That might make a great fund raiser.

You're rightÂI do have a nice barn that needs a little perking up for spring. Well, a lot of perking up, actually. But from the way my cousin tells it, we could be talking about spring of 2009 . . . she says it takes a long time to paint one of these. Taping of the triangles, and all that. Plus they use a crew of four guys to hang them.

Still, I could see me taking over my son's workshop, happily painting on rainy days when I can't work in the garden. Summer is no time to be hooking wool rugs, so this does sound like a good creative outlet for warm weather. Hmmmm........

What a great idea! I'd love a smaller one for my garden shed. I'm forwarding this to a friend in NH he's very talented.

They are hugely popular in Iowa - you see them on lots of barns.

I typed in "painting barn quilts" and found a bunch of different counties in IA that are doing them.

I think I would like one on the front of our barn/home.

I'm going to have to go through a quilt idea book to find what I'd like. I'd like something about "blessings" because we sure could use some.

Our barn is almost identical to #6, and even though I'd love to have a barn quilt hanging on it, I just can't see that happening. :)

Those are beautiful! I've seen pics of some in Iowa. I would love to be able to take a road trip to see some of them. And meet the artists.

Those barn quilts are really cool. But I don't need another project, and I don't have a barn!

Those are really pretty and colorful. They sure stand out on an old weathered barn. Cool!

I love the barn quilts. I don't have a barn, but I do have a backyard shed. My daughter is artistically-inclined. I may ask her to paint my shed.

We have lots in Iowa. Personally I think they look too bright and garish on a weathered barn and they need to be toned down by burnt umber or something. The bright colors look great on a painted barn. Just my opinion.

Kalona, Iowa, has a lot of them on each barn along the highway. I agree...the barns look better with the quilts when they are painted. They are fun to watch for...some of them have a quilt on the front "and" on the back. We have two wonderful barns on each side of our house...I've considered putting up barn quilts myself, but have never done it. There was a display of barns at our local museum a year or so ago and our barns were featured...they are old dairy barns...no longer used for that though.

Lois, I agree with you about the colors. I'm not a big fan of bright colors in general, and I was thinking if I made one of these my colors would be more "greyed" and "off." I was also thinking maybe the barn quilts weather over time, getting toned down. But I wouldn't want to have to wait for that.

They must really put a sealer on them because I haven't noticed them looking weathered at all....In Kalona, there is a lady to makes them, and there's a lumber yard in that area that sells them also....

We are not farmers but the barn was here when we bought the ground to build our home. I can't tell you how many times I've had to beg my husband not to tear it down. He says we don't use it, but I love seeing it. :)

What fun that would be to do!
