Comments (41)Yeah, I'm still wondering about the avocados. I had trouble growing them in my back yard when I planted a tree in the ground because my soil does not drain properly, but there is an incredibly huge avocado tree just down the street from me. Anyway, I ended up planting one in a whiskey barrel planter so that I could control the drainage better, and it produces avocados. However, I noticed a few months ago that the soil level was lowered by about 6-8", and I thought the tree had used up all the soil. Last week we transplanted it to a new whiskey barrel planter, and what had happened was that the barrel had rotten at the bottom, and everything just sank down. The tree was not root-bound, but now it has a lot more new soil. Anyway, you can get avocados from trees in planters. Mine is a dwarf....See MoreHigh/Very High Fire Danger for Sun.-Wed.
Comments (1)On Wed., the southwestern portion of Oklahoma may see the development of critical fire weather conditions as a dry line moves across the area accompanied by high winds. The danger zone includes the cities of Clinton, Lawton and Alton and extends across the river into the Wichita Falls, Texas, area. Latest map linked below. Click on the Wed. map at the right side of the linked page to enlarge it. Gardeners in southwestern OK should thoroughly water their landscapes and plants well in advance of the dry line and keep their eyes open for possible development of wildfire. Even though I am far enough east that the severe fire threat shouldn't reach us on Wed., I've been mowing pastures down short, removing brush and pruning up tree limbs. As dry as it is here in southcentral OK, you can't be too careful. We've had two very, very minor wildfires on our property in the decade we've been here, but we've had a couple of significantly larger ones on the three ranches just across the road from us, and it makes you pay attention to fire weather warnings once you've been 'threatened' with their destructive capacity. Dawn Here is a link that might be useful: Updated map for Wed....See MoreWhite Bird of Paradise - Separation - Live or Die
Comments (5)FYI It's been a year since we separate our White Bird. We have approximately 8 separate plants from our one original one. All are growing and happy with their new location. We only had one that we actually had to use stakes to make sure it didn't topple over. The average height of the replants was 8-10 feet tall. My advise is to work slowly and try to keep a good root intact....See MoreDo I live in Paradise?
Comments (26)John, yes! I love your story, thanks for sharing. I consider myself to be pretty adventurous as well and I met my husband during one of those adventures when I was only 18 years old in Japan (he's a NY'er, but he was there adventuring too). It has been my mission to take our kids on travels whenever we can and if it were up to me we would be living overseas somewhere. However, my husband is rooted deeply here in Hawaii and has asked me if we could hold off on adventuring abroad (long-term) until our youngest is out of college. We have two kids and assuming that our son (10 yrs old now) will go to college right after high school for four years, I'll be 47 yrs old when he leaves the house at 22. After that, the kids can visit us abroad : ) Also, wow, 8th generation infantry officer; thank you for that long line of service! As a young gun, I also served and my pride and joy during my time was obtaining secondary MOS 8023....See Moreuncle molewacker z9b Danville CA (E.SF Bay)
