Luxe Loggia and an Inviting Pool Create a Backyard Paradise
Custom outdoor furniture, global decor and tropical plants fill a stylish and serene backyard in Palm Beach, Florida
Wanting a vacation home to get away from the cold winters in New York, the homeowner purchased an Art Deco-style house in Palm Beach, Florida, that includes a large covered patio (or loggia) off the living room that leads to a swimming pool surrounded by lush tropical plants. She then reached out to designer Sean Rush to create a luxurious space that mixes new and old finds from around the world and provides a seamless indoor-outdoor connection.
The vintage midcentury engraved bronze coffee table was designed by Philip and Kevin LaVerne. “The coffee table anchors the space,” Rush says. “It’s a beautiful piece that adds interest and heft.”
The designer placed a variety of accent pieces from around the globe atop the coffee table. The pair of bronze crane statues behind the sofa are from Bali.

Two perforated metal lanterns from Morocco add a warm glow at night when the candles inside them are lit. The pair of potted gardenia trees produce white flowers in season that complement the space’s cream-tone color palette.
Rush added midcentury-style modular outdoor furniture that can be moved easily to create portable seating areas.
The designer worked tropical grasses and palm trees into the existing landscape to fill in the yard and create various sightlines. A stone buddha statue on the opposite side of the pool helps to draw the eye from the living room to the back of the yard.

A pair of teak and canvas outdoor chaise lounges are an ideal spot to take in some sun and dry off from the pool. Rush used a stone frog statue to create the custom outdoor umbrella stand. The custom bronze side table features a top that mimics the leaf of a ginkgo biloba tree. The spherical stone water feature tucked in back atop a bed of river stones completes the relaxing scene.

The covered patio is located off the living room and features a 14-foot-tall ceiling. The floor is covered in travertine tiles. The designer added a pair of custom outdoor sofas with powder-coated metal frames and cream-tone upholstered cushions. “The sofas are very sumptuous. They’re perfect for taking a nap on,” Rush says.
Floor-to-ceiling acrylic dyed curtains help frame the view of the pool and can also be closed to protect from inclement weather and insects. “The curtains look like linen, but because they’re synthetic they’re ideal for holding up to the outside.”
