White Bird of Paradise - Separation - Live or Die
Comments (5)FYI It's been a year since we separate our White Bird. We have approximately 8 separate plants from our one original one. All are growing and happy with their new location. We only had one that we actually had to use stakes to make sure it didn't topple over. The average height of the replants was 8-10 feet tall. My advise is to work slowly and try to keep a good root intact....See MoreCan I remove 75% of a Giant Bird of Paradise?
Comments (2)Hi i did that with mine in fact removed the whole thing as I wanted the area for a tree fern bed . I ended up with a hole around 3 feet deep and 5 feet wide. In spite of that it sprouted again within two months lol good luck gary...See MoreMakes me feel I live on Paradise Island
Comments (27)Yes I didn't get to the tip of the South Island but the few days I had driving down about 1/3 of the western spine of it were some of the windiest I remember; it's different from the wind we get during non-tropical cyclonic weather because it's so sustained and unrelenting. This is apparently a feature of some maritimes climates more than others. Though the PNW has "Pineapple express" type storms once in a while, they are not known for being very windy for days on end. A friend of the family who moved to Seattle said it was the stillest place she'd ever lived...but she'd mostly lived before in the midwest and high plains, and if you look at this map, her observations are spot on for someone coming from that background: http://apps2.eere.energy.gov/wind/windexchange/windmaps/residential_scale.asp I imagine coastal South Island NZ and Cornwall would be an orange or even purple on the same scale. I can even vouch for the slight shadings you see: the Piedmont of the northeast has a windiness the south does not. If I drive up to Lancaster Co. on a summer day, it's typical that there's a slight breeze in the air that you wouldn't get in say, Richmond, VA, where I've spend some time in the summer....See MoreClimber with lavender/red bicoloring like Paradise or Paradise Found?
Comments (8)Hi Cori Ann, Do you need the rose to actually "climb" on something or just need the height of a climber? Paradise is a tall HT with stiff canes that wouldn't be easy to train to climb unless you got the climbing sport...but in your climate, the non-climber might get tall enough as a free standing bush if that fits your need. We have colder winters here, and I prune my non climbing version of Paradise to around 2 ft beginning of each season...still it grows to at least 7 ft by fall each season. Here's the top of mine last July towering over everything else already only half way into our season:...See More- 7 years ago
