I've been watching the price of the jacket online. Well actually it keeps popping up in my Facebook feed. I'll probably just reorder it when it goes on sale. I ordered it in large and extra large so I'm keeping one and DD want's one now too...but she needs a small.

I have had problems calling a store and asking about anything like this. You get to the store and all of a sudden, they shrug and say they can't do that. ALWAYS get it in writing, most major stores have email contact. That way if there is any discrepancy, you can pull up their written reply and although it might take a supervisor, generally get them to do what they promised to do in writing.

I didn't say call a store. Like any online seller, they have a Customer Service number for the website.

Getting something in writing is fine if you're preparing to file a lawsuit or you want to press a point. Written information can be as wrong as oral information and it takes longer to get. And it's not binding on them.

If you want an answer you can act on today, call.

If you can show a written reply (perhaps emailed) (that suits you) at the store, the possibility of having your request honoured may be enhanced, even if it causes a referral to a supervsor that might not have been avaible without it.

From my experience, if you're exchanging for the same item they honor the original price you paid. It may be easier for you to just do the exchange online, and again, they'll usually honor the price you paid. As mentioned above, call the online customer service desk. Also, there shouldn't be any additional shipping cost for an online exchange.

I know that WalMart does not honor Walmart.com prices. I had seen something online at a good price and went to the store, it was considerably higher. Had printed the online info and was told that's for online only. I realize different stores, different policies ... but that experience has led me to treat all online stores as separate from the brick and mortar stores.

Could you not exchange the one for a small online?

Exactly. Employees generally do not want to go against specific written directives from their own company that show a decision in a particular situation.

In my experience, if you say "they told me such and such", that's enough. I can do that today, you can wait for your written reply, if that's even possible.

As a former seasonal Macy's employee (will never do that again!!), they will accept and refund an online return but do not have the ability to order another online product for you. Is it something they carry in stock at the store? If so, they will do an exchange.

gardengal...do they still pay commission to employees for womens clothing sales? I knew a woman who said she made more working there than her regular....needed a college degree job. :0)

No commissions for seasonal employees :-) And I worked in Home Goods anyway.

But we did get previews for any sales and received our employee discount in addition to the sale price.

Working retail during the holiday season is something to be avoided at all costs, IMO :-)

My nearest Macy's has almost no inventory. There's nothing I want to buy, and there IS no stock from which to make an exchange.

I can find clothing online, but it shipping is very slow. Much of the time the item isn't as described -- the "all cotton nightgowns" that were cotton *knit* -- or the item is oddly sized.

Nov. 29 I ordered four items. One arrived a week later and was OK. A fleece top arrived Dec. 10 and is XS in the shoulders but at least 4" wider than a S in the body. Two other tops never shipped. When I called Dec. 10, I waited 15 minutes for a representative and was told the missing tops would arrive in two days. (Nope.) They said they'd reorder the XS. That hasn't happened, and I now have an email that they want the defective top returned. Fortunately, I had not disposed of this unsaleable top. I was promised a $10 coupon by way of apology; haven't seen that either.

This isn't "Christmas rush". IME it's just normal.

You will have to exchange item to get the same price. The problem with online ordering is that you may have to pay the return shipping. You can see from the Macy's.com site IF your item is available at the store. Unless you are at the NYC location, it's probably not available.

Every company will have different practices. I bought a jacket from the Lands' End catalog, it didn't fit but I loved the jacket. Took it to a local Lands' End store and they took my return and ordered another in the correct size to be delivered to me, no shipping charge.And at the same sales price.

There is no standard practice.
