'The Dark Lady'

On its own roots, it's never grown really well here ... but it's getting more water now, and starting to bloom a lot for the amount of plant there is. And you sure can't fault the blooms . . .
I saw one bloom last evening, when we walked the dogs, and went back to pick it. I found four more opening, too! So, though the stems are thin and week, what a bouquet.
OH, and fragrant as all getout. Even I can smell it.

5 years agoVaporvac, that's Mission Santa, founded in Santa Barbara, CA in 1786. I don't really have a picture of the Mission on my wall. It's a picture of our late Afghan Hound, Webster, sitting in the A.C. Postel Rose Garden, across from the Mission.
I think we went up to S.B. to do that photo the day before we clipped down his coat, following his retirement from the show ring.

Comments (7)I can comment on Lady of Shallot and Carding Mill! The Lady was new to me this year, and I was impressed. She grew quickly, and got nice and big - and for a first year rose, bloomed a lot. The flowers are very lovely and unique. Mine had no disease issues this year. Carding Mill has been more problematic. The flowers are really stunning, but it never bloomed much for me. I think this was a placement issue (not enough sun), but my overall impression is that it may not be as vigorous. I ended out potting mine up, but by the time I did this it was down to one cane. But the flowers are sufficiently gorgeous that I'm ordering a new one from RU this year to try again. Incidentally, I see you mention St. Elisabeth of Hungary - isn't she pink? (I'm ordering one from Heirloom this year, and they list it as pink)....See More'The Dark Lady'
Comments (6)Debby, I bet yours is budded, and I think that's the best way to grow it. But . . . My first Dark Ladies were own-root. They bloomed well, but didn't grow, and turned out to be the worst-virused roses I've ever owned. Then, we tried buying budded ones, but THEY turned out to be some unidentified pink HT that rusted solid. THEN we got these. I assume they're virused tho that hasn't shown ... but I they've never grown tall enough to get ample sun. We're not giving up on them, though. Comments (14)My Mom got the first DA rose, Golden Celebration, the year it came out, 92, I think and it is still here. Later I got Graham Thomas as a mislabel. About 5 years ago I thought I'd try something pink so I got Queen of Sweden and Jubilee Celebration. I'm not real impressed with any of them. GC can be gorgeous when it's in its spring flush and it does smell divine but so far the rest aren't anything to write home about. Also, they are all water hogs and spot magnets for me! Having been an exhibitor I guess I just prefer the HT form better myself. I have no trouble wintering any of them really but I'm a full zone warmer than you, Steven. Madison, Dr. Huey and Multiflora are the preferred root stocks for cold zones. Dr. Huey was almost exclusive for decades until the Canadians started using Multiflora with good results. Now almost all the roses from the Canadian mail order nurseries are on Multiflora. The only root stock I wouldn't recommend is Fortuniana. It is marvelous in warm climates and really pushes big, fast growth but it has a habit of rooting very shallow so it is very freeze tender.
