My understanding of what you are asking is a mitered corner. Is that right? I am a quilter and miter my corners all the time. This is what have done and it works well for me. I sew on each of the borders on the side first and then the top and bottom leaving a tail on each end at least two inches longer then the width of the border. I then take the piece and fold it edge to edge on the diagonal and match up the edges. Take each tail and fold them back on each other to match the folder and press with your fingers to crease it and pin in place on the creases. Open it up and see if your seams lay flat. You can also cut the diagonal if you have a 45 degree line on a square ruler. It works for me. If you still have a problem, I can copy the way I do it from a book that I have and post the picture on here for you to follow. Some people are visual learners and some are not. I am one of those visual learners.

My cooktop and hood are not centered on the wall. They do line up with the window on the other side (which is basically cented on that wall, but the walls are not even) and the center of the island and light fixture over the island. My wall is 33" DO cabinet -- 48" bake center (48" base and 45" upper)--42" hood -- 24" micro drawer base with 21" upper above. About 24" of the 33" oven cabinet is setoff against a 24" deep wall of cabiunets perpendicular to it. There is an open doorway there, so no corner cabinets. I think it all looks balanced because of the relationship between the walls, window, etc. In a different room, it might not work as well.

Davidro1 (and Amity - re. the youtube video link) - Re. starting in the center and going out, the problem there is that the center between the two end walls is off from where the center of the vertical beam is that comes down between the two main kitchen windows behind the faucet. The center of the entire countertop (and therefor backsplash) visually appears to be right down the middle of that line (though it isn't), behind the the faucet and centered directly behind the sink. So I have to work from there, out - if I start from THAT center point. And then of course what I'd have consequently on each end would be uneven. Now what I did happen to notice is that if I start with a full piece of tile along the first row, on the far left side wall (not the back wall), up in the front and furthest from the corner, and go toward the wall then wrap around the corner, onto the back wall, the first piece on the back wall (far left) would only be about 1.5-2" wide. But if I were to continue along that back wall, toward the "center" behind the sink, a full piece lands smack center behind the faucet, really nicely (and that was with spacing as close as I imagine 1/16" to be, and giving some extra spacing in the corners like 1/8"). It also continues on and makes it to the end, beautifully (the end of that section anyway; cause there's a small bump-out from hidden pipes there). So that leads me to this very important question: If I'm wrapping around a corner anyway, does it matter if there's a thin piece there (1 1/2 to 2") since the eye gets drawn around the corner if measured properly for that effect? Or is that just a big fat no-no? When playing with the tiles like this, I liked that the left wall would look nicer cause that wall won't be hidden (toward the front) but in the rear - in the corner - there will be an appliance hiding the corner details most likely. What say you? I know the tiler will know a hell of a lot more than me - than most basic contractors too - so I'm not too worried but just trying to wrap my head around what choices I may have, if he puts me on the spot and asks me to decide which way I prefer. Shar-az - ok I can tell you wrote something really smart there. It's too bad I'm an idiot!!! What do you mean by "snap it on the floor?" I was always bad at this type of math. Sigh... Thank you so so so much everyone!!! This kitchen job's been such a nightmare that I just want this portion of it to turn out well - it would make me feel soooo much better and would compensate (to some degree) for some pretty bad luck (and awkward work) so far!

I just took a look through my old threads to see if there were things I should go back and update (because I love when posters come back to update), and found this one. The end to the saga was that an almost-adequate resolution was reached final results were not ideal. -The general contractor agreed the tile installation was not ok and came back and pulled all the tile off the wall, hoping to re-use much of it -The tile subcontractor (who was not my GC's usual tile contractor and was frankly not very good) grudgingly came back, and did a mediocre re-do job at their own expense. The seam in question was handled better the second time around but the tile was installed with slightly uneven spacing, and they didn't look closely enough at each tile as they re-installed it so a few with minor chips were re-installed. I think it looked better before the grouchy redo despite the stupid seam. -The overall look is still pretty good, and we decided to live with it. We were due to move into our house after 8 months of renovations and were just out of patience at this point. It didn't seem like we were going to get a better fix. -We've been living with it for two years. I rarely think about the backsplash, but it gets on my husband's nerves and he wants to rip it all out and have it redone at our own expense in the next couple of years -Overall our home turned out beautifully. Our GC claims he didn't work with that tile subcontractor again. We're now doing another renovation to a different part of the house with the same GC and he has since found a GREAT tile guy who just did a gorgeous bathroom tile installation for us. I watched the poor guy like a hawk every step of the way, having learned my lesson. Below is a (somewhat staged) pic my designer took of our kitchen just after it was finished. Ironically in this picture she has our sodastream positioned right in fact of the previously offending and now adequately-fixed seam, but at least you can see what the overall look is!
