That's a gorgeous tile! Very modern without looking trendy. I especially love it in the bottom picture where the blue looks a bit greyed on my monitor. I love the idea of this tile with white shaker cabinets. My worry would be how well does it go with the oak? Is that the hardwood in the first picture? If so, I think it will look fab together.

You're bound to get loads of tile ideas.

(She's sure she wants tile though? I so regret mine. It's a bloody hard floor for aging joints.)

And yes, shivece is right: the white grout will be hard to keep clean. I'd be tempted to use this tile as the backsplash and keep the hardwood in the kitchen but I understand about spills, etc. Those are definite cons to a hardwood floor in the kitchen. But so many people have them! How do they manage?

I love the tile, but, I also love the flooring that is there now. Maybe a refinising with a tougher top coat, to resist water. I dont blame her a bit for wanting some color. Too many boring colorless houses these days. Its a beautiful house, I hope she can enjoy it for a very long time.

All cement tiles I tried(I love cement tiles with all my heart, and they can be very fitting in some houses, and yours-or one on the pic- fits the bill) were very slippery when wet

So I'd keep that in mind

it's a beautful house, and there are several ways to make the transition very natural and pretty. Is it yours, or is it an inspiration picture?..

(because the easiness of transition will depend on the particular layout)

but when it's about flooring, and hard working space, and space with spills and all-I'd prioritize needs(I don't know your Mother, granted..everyone's different, and is wary of different things..the tiles will be slippery though, I checked)), and I'd tailor aesthetics to the needs.

I went with wood..because in my life I fell on different surfaces..)) and I can definitely tell the difference..

but. we put cabinets on tiles. in case there's some flooding you know-then it doesn't completely ruin the cabinets,

If you don't start your kitchen from scratch it might be hard to do. But if you do install new cabinets too-it's something that can give one some peace of mind.

It might be also cool to have sort of a "rug" made with tiles..in the kitchen..

Will cost more-as everything less usuall, more laborous does

And will require much consideration, of course

We used stained cork in our kitchen. We like how it goes with hardwood. It gives the look of tile, but is very forgiving. Ours is just stained white, but it seems to come in a variety of colours and tile shapes.

Thank you so much! These are all inspiration photos but she definitely wants that exact wood floor throughout the house. So, so helpful on reminding us that tile is unforgiving on the knees and joints and that tile would get slippery when wet. This should definitely be a consideration. I was also worried about keeping the white cement tile and white grout clean. We've gone back & forth between all hardwood and having both. I know they have the acrylic impregnated prefinished at factory wood that is especially resistant to water but my mother thinks they look a little fake and it seems they are engineered hardwood, unless I have not located a good source. Or perhaps, it will need a few layers of sealant. She's a fast on her feet little cook, I definitely do not want her falling on hard tile. I may need to convince her to go with all wood and place a mat here & there. Thank you!

Julia, if you're able to..regarding mats-there are beautiful, very sturdy vinyl ones, that can look like cement tiles too

I got one small one for us, and one bigger one for my MIL..and we're happy with them as they don't move around and are very easy to keep clean)

The unforgiving nature of tile sneaks up on you. I remember my MIL telling me it was a hard floor when we were doing our kitchen over twelve years and I scoffed. How hard can it be, I thought. She suggested vinyl. OMG. Vinyl! I turned up my nose at that. And also, I kept thinking of off-gasing. Well, I got my tile floor and then had to deal with the godforsaken grout. Thankfully, it's one of those tiles with a pattern that hides the dirt well. But the grout! I asked about sealing it when we did the floor but the contractor said it didn't make much difference. Besides, he said, you just clean it. And he's right. I do. On my hands and knees with a toothbrush.

After a couple of years, I'd notice that I wasn't spending much time in the kitchen. Washing the pots and pans wasn't a 15-minute chore anymore. I'd give up after five mins or so. Finally dawned on me that I couldn't stand to stand in there for very long. Everything hurts. (We got a gel cushion mat for the sink area. I wish it covered the whole floor.)

Never again. I'd rather have a water-stained hardwood floor in there than tile. If the wood got too bad, I'd paint it with marine-grade paint. Or I'd look into cork, linoleum and vinyl a bit more. Cork wasn't widely available back then. I can handle tile in bathrooms but not in the kitchen where I must be on my feet for more than a few minutes.

tartan, no they're not...which to me is good as they lie very flat, very close to the floor, no tripping hazard..but one can put them on these rug pads if one wishes, i presume?..I didnt try myself

Do site-finished hardwood with a high gloss, "gym-floor" finish through. Get a couple of oriental runners for the kitchen - they will pick up small spills (I'm assuming she doesn't spill the entire pot of pasta water!). They will be easier on her knees and hips, will look better and will easy to keep clean. I'm 75- I speak from long experience with these floors and others.
