are these Baronne Prevost and Marchesa Boccella?
Comments (21)Sherry, that rose is SO BEAUTIFUL. Thanks everyone! I heard back from the curator, he said that my photo of Baronne Prevost was right, but that while the rose I saw was labeled as Marchesa Boccella, you guys were right that Marchesa was mislabled. He said there used to be a Marchesa there, but that it must have died. He said they check the labels every couple years and just hadn't noticed that one. So the rose I took a photo of that I thought was Marchesa, is actually Marchioness of Lorne. He also said that Baronne, Bourbon Mme. Lauriol de Barny and Marchioness of Lorne both do reasonably well at their garden (and this climate) ... and probably would do ok for me. By the way, he also recommended Reine des Violettes and Souvenir de la Malmaison as being pretty tough (I already have those, so yay!) He also recommended York and Lancaster (damask) and Porland from Glendora (Porland) , if you're curious! :)...See Morela reine, boule de neige, baronne prevost, felicia, nur mahal
Comments (20)Geo, even hybrid musks are not created equal. I grow Felicia in full blazing sun and she has been blooming since early April. My Buff Beauty is in a shadier spot but has cleaner foliage than Felicia that does get spotty. Another fantastic Hybrid musk is Prosperity, it is clean and keeps blooming even in this terrible drought in a semi-shady position - in summer it gets more sun than in spring and fall. I wish I could say the same of its neighbor, Baron Giraud de l'Ain; I think that the baron would do better even in less sun in my hot and humid climate. There was a HP expert on this forum, Pete of Belgium; he suggested afternoon shade for HPs and very rich diet. Does anyone know why he stopped posting? I miss him when I dream about HPs doing better here....See More(photos) Baronne Prevost, La Reine, Carding Mill
Comments (17)So sorry about that mishap, Masha. I hope your rose grows back quickly. Aimee, I have Bermuda's Kathleen and I can attest to the fact that it does well in the heat, since it's planted in full sun in front of a heat-radiating large boulder. Then it was half-buried by squirrels who were excavating under the said boulder and dumped all the dirt under the rose. In spite of that it's still blooming and putting out new shoots. It's not at its most attractive now and under these conditions but it was lovely last year and seems to be in constant bloom. I haven't grown the other two and can't make a comparison. Actually, I just remembered that I grew Archduke Charles years ago and for me it was mostly a very dark pink without the lighter coloration. It must have been the heat. Comments (3)After I stopped spraying, I encouraged Baronne for about 2 or 3 years. Considering the stress the 2 plants gave me when I cut them out of my garden, I don't miss them. In my garden Baronne grew tall with huge canes, but also put out horizontal canes with thin canes off of them. It was difficult for me to maintain a decent shape, and I was always stuck by the canes. The blooms were very pretty, but I had them beside Maggie and Fredrick Mistral who also had pretty blooms. In Tulsa the leaves were not often clean. At this point I would say you are very patient. I don't know much about Florida weather, but in the spring in Tulsa, we do need to cut back dead or dying canes, and we like to go as far down as possible. I found it very difficult to get around BP without coming out with injuries. Sammy...See MoreLisa Adams
