Though not on the flag, the color orange is popular for the Dutch because it's the family name of the much beloved monarch and family of the Netherlands. Their family dynasty is called the House of Orange-Nassau. Before his mother, Queen Beatrix, abdicated (stepped down as monarch) so that her son could become king, now King Willem-Alexander as heir apparent was known as the Prince of Orange. Dutch sports teams and other athletic competitors often wear orange as a symbol of their country.

Just as the British (really English) monarchs are now said to belong to the House of Windsor. This is a relatively new and made-up name without historical significance to the family's ancestral past. It was chosen to replace the real family name of Saxe-Coburg around World War I. The name change was done at a time when Germany was a most unpopular enemy in the war and it was thought the British people wouldn't be warm to constant reminders that the family and dynasty of their monarchs was from Germany.

Lars, I don't typically gravitate towards that type of art style, but I really like your brother's painting. A lot.

Art appreciation is a confusing topic for me. I'm looking to get a few new paintings next year, but cannot even narrow down artists by their style, because I'll like one sold painting, but none of the others available. A look at what I own now that I like is all over the place. Not one of them is even remotely similar to your brother's. I've thought about opening a help thread in the Designs forum, but they'd probably end up thrashing me for being so inconsistent.

gyr_falcon, are you in Los Angeles? If so, you could come by my house and look at other paintings that my brother has done. A lot of them are stacked up in the garage, and he's gone through several different styles. In addition to his paintings, I have my own collection of art done by various friends of mine - mostly in San Francisco.

I do not think you should hesitate to ask an art question on this forum or on the regular design forum. Art is very personal, and you just have to collect what speaks to you.

Looks like you have nasturtiums also. Here they bloom in Jan-Feb, and I grow them to put in salads.

Lars, how generous of you! We live in south OC, and although we rarely head toward LA, it isn't that far. However, the money that will finance the possible art purchases is expected, but haven't arrived yet. (No, not waiting for someone to die or anything like that.) So I'm still possibly a year or two out. Some necessary home remodeling and repairs need to be at the front of the line. I'm early scouting art in the interim to get a handle on possibilities and preferences because I cannot seem to get a handle on them. But when we are at the time, I might contact you to see if the your offer is still available.
