2018 Cool Season Vegetable Grow List
Comments (37)Amy, Your list is officially the most insane list so far. How many big tubs are you going to use? I always try to not devote so much space to cool-season plants that no space remains for warm-season ones. That's always a huge challenge for me, so I have to really watch myself at cool-season planting time. nowyousedum, All my asparagus is in one bed---each variety has its own row. Planting times vary, but for most cool-season veggies, the OSU-recommended planting dates are from Feb 15 to Mar 10. I'll link the fact sheet with the dates. With some things, like asparagus, you can plant them as soon as you get your hands on the crowns. I'm pretty sure that in the year I planted mine, I bought the bags of crowns in early January and planted immediately, Since asparagus is perennial and can stay in place for decades, it is important to do great soil prep first because you cannot go back after the fact and dig up the roots and redo the soil. Any future soil improvement you do after the asparagus is planted mostly consists of adding layers of compost and mulch on top of the asparagus bed and letting it get worked into the soil naturally by rainfall and small burrowing/digging insects and earthworms. Here's the OSU planting guide with dates. Please note that there's a range of dates for each veggie. For Spring planting, the earliest dates are recommended for far southeastern OK, the latest dates for far northwestern OK, and the rest of us who live in between the two extremes choose an appropriate date, based on our location and weather, somewhere within that range of dates. Oklahoma Garden Planning Guide Jack, I like the purple asparagus a lot. It has a very fine flavor. I hope you enjoy yours as well. Dawn...See MoreBest Pinks of the Season 2018
Comments (81)There are no photo posts from me; I'm guessing they disappeared or never posted correctly, as I did comment above on all of yours. Wind Frills awesome as usual. A bit short this and last year, so I divided them. Chance Encounter did extremely well in spite of being split last year. Becky Lynn, a great performer almost every year. Comments (17)I don't seem to have many in this color range. The first two below are some of my very best daylilies..... TREASURE OF THE SOUTHWEST This one is one of my absolute favorites of my daylilies and I seem to take it's photo the most....it and Jerry Hyatt. (I found at least a dozen shots I took this summer). There are all the colors of a sunset in this one. It makes a tremendous clump that blooms endlessly with multiple scapes and buds, is super-robust and healthy and the substance holds up in the heat and the cold. In the heat it has more coral tones..... in cool weather it takes on more pink tones..... either way, it's gorgeous! SOUTH SEAS This golden oldie can not be beat for both brilliant color, reliable performance, hardiness and vigor. I will never be without this one. VT BETSY Not well known or widely grown, this Olallie late-bloomer will keep pumping out blooms dozens at a time well into September. Narrow grass-like foliage and dainty stems with fluttering blooms that remind me of butterflies in the breeze. RUNNER UPS..... This one could potentially be a favorite in future years. It's relatively new so it hasn't proven itself but the color has the 'wow factor'..... SMOKY MOUNTAIN AUTUMN BITTERSWEET DESTINY This is a daylily I tucked away in an obscure part of the garden and I always mean to move it where it can shine because the color is wonderful....See MoreBest UFs and Spiders of 2018
Comments (39)Karen, you are right that fulva 'Europa' is very hard to set seeds on. Stout appparently made thousands of crosses to get just a few seeds. There are, however, other varieties of fulva that will set seeds with tets (and not just rarely, but quite often). We never get very many seeds in a pod and many seeds eventually go bad in storage, but we get a fair few. In fact, this year we have 308 seeds from fulva varieties to play with. The varieties that we use are fulva cypriana, 'Korean,' 'Hankow,' 'Switzerland,' and 'Yunnan'. These varieties of fulva do not bloom as early as 'Europa' so their offspring are more midseason bloomers. 'Hankow' blooms late for us. Nancy...See Moresherrygirl zone5 N il
