Using Chair Rail - what other color to use with Accessible beige?

Hi All --Can you suggest what might be a good color to pair with Accessible beige when using a chair rail? I'd like to keep the walls light, so I'm not sure if the AB should be on the top or bottom --but I want to add a little interest. Thanks for any advice!

What color is the chair rail? White? IMO chair rails rarely add interest how people want. Just paint the whole wall, including the chair rail, one color.

paint the wall the same color. Typically the lighter color is above, and the darker color below; or all one color. Sanderling or Cadet below the chair rail.

Totally understand the dilemma of trim that “came With the house” repainting trim is expensive If the color on the walls in the pic above the latte pic is natural tan, i don’t mind it. But I do see some green undertones in the natural tan swatch which is why it might be making your trim look yellowish. On the wall in that pic though i see what you mean by bluish dirty gray. I don’t dislike the color, but i see how it’s not what you were going for. By cut it, i mean make it 60%. Tell the Sherwin will people and they‘ll know exactly what you mean. Decreasing the darkness/depth will increase the light reflective value. Accessible beige at full “strength“ will be dark like the latte. You want half strength or 60% accessible beige. Show them the depth of natural tan and tell them you want accessible beige at that depth. they will know better than me what percentage will get you the same depth. They do it for me all of the time. They can make a little 4 dollar can for you to try. Also, off the top of my head, i think sherwin Williams worldly Gray might look nice. Try grab the Sample card of that while you’re in there. It’s a really really pretty color and the right depth.

Have you thought of a light green? I could see both light blues or greens in your space, @MomMom M. Anyway, just watched Sarah Richardson's paint tour of her Starlight Farm on YT. Her colour palette is all about soothing whites and watery colours and when she waxed poetic about Dulux' Chelsea Fog in her principal bedroom. "....a bit of green, a bit of blue, a bit of grey...", I thought of your post. She calls it a changeable colour (which means light can probably make it look totally different depending on time of day). She also has a great neutral alternative to white and grey that's not really beige (Glidden's Meeting House White) and talks about mixing warm and cool colours in her home. I think I've used Dulux in our powder room but have no experience with Glidden. Anyway, her little tour certainly piqued my interest in these two brands. @Jennifer Hogan's statement that "everyone has a different happy place when it comes to color." is SO true. It doesn't matter if we can't find online reviews on a paint colour. What matters is we like the colour. (Assuming we're painting for ourselves and not resale, of course. :)) Best of luck with your search. Hope you'll report back.

You say you will be replacing your furniture in a few years. I advise you take some time to read any thing and everything about decorating. Look at magazines for furniture style, colors, patterns ...in short educate your self on what you like. Investigate fabrics...not plastics fabrics ...to see what wonderful colors and textures they come in...and most fabrics are now protected with ScotchGuard or some thing similar. And please no gray....

In bedrooms IMO the bedding drives wall color so post pics of the bedrooms as for the hall and the stairs we need pics of those and pics of your furniture in the space next to the stairs on the main floor .I have to tell that is one color I really do not like at all so I really need pics to understand that wall color anywhere.

I'm wondering whether you need a chair rail at all these days. We had one in the drawing room when we moved in and it was one of the first things to go. Apart from being redundant (the way we laid out the room), we just found it interfered with furniture and picture placement. Assuming you want to keep it, I agree that the entire wall in one color looks best.

I would advise painting the Accessible Beige above the chair rail, and below the chair rail the same color/finish as the chair rail and other trim in the room. It mimics wainscoting, and will visually lighten and brighten. Here's an example that I did in a dining room that gets very little natural light. Even though we replaced the floors with darker laminate, painting below the chair rail helped this space *feel* lighter and brighter.

Thank you all so much for your advice. Great suggestions! I never thought about it all one color or the same as trim. Really interesting. The pictures really help me visualize. It looks great!
