Could you please me choose the right grass?
Comments (6)'Hameln' is a lovely choice. I grow a few of them, and they are very elegant little plants. However, depending upon the severity of your winter, it can get a bit tatty, and while it usually doesn't need to be cut back early, it may not qualify as interesting after being beaten down by a wet winter snowstorm. At best, any warm season grass will have to be cut back to the ground in late-winter to early-spring, and although I find freshly sprouting grasses interesting, they do not begin to re-fill their spaces for quite a few months. You might take a look at some of the Carex varieties. I've just started to experiment with more of them in the past couple of years, and I'm in a slightly warmer zone, but I find they have a good deal longer period of interest than grasses. Some of them are very close to evergreen for me, and require only a light brushing out in the spring. One of my favorites is Carex elata 'Bowles Golden.' Its color will startle you in the afternoon shade, and it makes a wonderful hedge plant. Another beauty is Carex oshimensis 'Evergold.' It's smaller than 'Bowles Golden' but just as beautiful. This one looks especially nice when you scatter some good looking rocks in its bed and let it grow around and over them. Others to consider: Carex glauca 'Blue Zinger' Carex morrowii 'Ice Dance' Carex grayii (for its unusual seed pods) Carex muskingumensis 'Oehme' or, for a smaller one, 'Little Midge' Finally, while it isn't a grass, Acorus gramineus 'Oborozuki' deserves a look. It is similar in habit to Liriope, but far better looking in my opinion. It wants a fairly moist environment, but if you can provide ample irrigation, it's a stand-out....See MoreHelp me not be part of the ABB club!
Comments (15)Gorgeous kitchen. I saw a backsplash a couple days ago on HGTV that made me think, "That would look GREAT with soapstone." It was a mosaic that mimicked the "powdery" look of soapstone, with a subtle tone on tone geometric that makes it special. Just looked through 8 pages of Houzz photos but couldn't find it. Then saw a couple links that were close below via google. I think this community does a great job at picking out the best options from a list of 5 or so that you upload pictures of. i.e., Give us the "GardenWeb" version of what the Zillow Diggs app feature "Dueling Digs" does, where you keeping picking the best of 2 options. Comments (32)I can totally sympathize. On top of the fact that unlike you, I am not a night owl and never could sleep soundly in the daytime, I also had a manager who would call at noon, knowing that I had probably been asleep only 3 hours. And my mother in law! I wonder if she was just being perverse. I would just drift off to sleep, aannnd.. the phone rings, it is Vi: "What are you doing still in bed?" "Vi, I was at work all night, remember? I just went to sleep!" "oh". More than once! Yes I started leaving the phone off the hook (back then no ringer off switch) Still had to contend with a landlord who would show up to do maintenance chores when I needed to sleep. He was an older man who never got it either. Just find out when my day off is, and come then, okay? My daughter worked an overnight job in college, and had the same problem with her housemates. Inconsiderate, and I think just truly couldn't grasp that she wasn't sleeping at work and had to sleep in the daytime! And they also couldn't seem to grasp that she needed just as much sleep as they did (I ran into that too, with family, who also didn't understand that it wasn't easy to flip back and forth for social occasions, so I wouldn't be spending the entire day...)...See MoreHelp me choose an exterior paint color - and any updating ideas?
Comments (4)Of the two colors you are considering, I think Blue Depths is a better color. A pergola, like this in white from your front door along the side of the building would look really charming. The lattice is very pretty. You could move the steps to the front door out to the front more and let the rain leader come straight down....See More- 7 years ago
