Comments (17)Funny thing about paintings.... especially family paintings. There are people who will go to great lengths to keep them in a family and pass them down through the generations. My great uncle was an artist who painted in oils in the late 1800's . He used to be a barber and had them all throughout his barbershop back in the day. He started selling some of them in Chicago to a department store. He used the money to help supplement his income. My grandmother wanted one particular painting of his that was in his home and when he died he left it to her. She also had a few smaller ones that she gave to my mom who eventually passed down to us kids. The large painting my grandma had was recently passed down from my uncle (who had no kids of his own) to my sister. She spent a fortune getting the painting back in shape by a curator. The curator commented that the frame itself was very valuable but not the painting. In spite of that we all have memories of that picture hanging in my grandma's living room. In the meantime, I found several of his paintings for sale on Ebay after deciding to look for them. Apparently they have been coming up from other estate sales. Since we all recognized his signature on the paintings we knew they were his. Since I am one of six sibs we have had to decide who is going to buy each one. Since I found his paintings online, I have been letting my sibs buy them. I havent found one that I really liked yet. And so far the ones that they bought fit their individual homes. Still waiting for one I like!...See MoreDecorating a new home around a Swedish Tile stove
Comments (63)@lindsey - stenciling is definitely on the list: Maybe even some freehand painting. Though I suspect it would be easy to go overboard with either or both, as well. And that board is lovely! @lyfia - I'm actually not sure that bow window will even stay just yet - financial constraints will necessitate certain tweaks to the plan. Really, he only sketched in a bit of furniture to help me grasp scale and what WOULD fit in the spaces. Since in the first iteration, I REALLY didn't get how big the plan was, and we ended up having to downsize it quite a bit. I agree, I do like to be able to look out windows, too. The tile stove will slide back from where he has it drawn, and get its own little niche, probably with some casing. We don't really have living room furniture for this space, so we'll be able to plan out a better layout when we shop for that. It's good to keep in mind, though! @beckysharp - that's a thought. I'll have to ask. I've been politely asked not to actually get vintage fixtures, as they can't pass inspection (not UL approved). Though a modern fixture with a vintage shade is fine. I've been doing some scouring of Etsy, Ebay, and local shops for those, as well as cabinet and door knobs and hardware....See MoreNew home dilemma
Comments (15)Lovely property, especially the back yard and pool. Spend some time in it and see how it "lives" for you. I too see issues I'd want to address, but paint and upgraded lighting is where I would start. Do the lighting first, bring in your furnishings and then hire a color specialist to get the paint color right. Once you've taken care of surprise stuff that may not function as it should, then start a kitty for the form issues. I would not be happy about the placement of either fireplace or the tiny shower. Those can wait. Live in it and make plans the first year, start making changes the second, complete them in the 3rd and enjoy your choices for a lifetime....See MoreDecorating dilemma for a new open concept Florida house. Comments (8)Furniture is an investment. I would feel more comfortable sitting on the couch that I plan on buying. If it's to hard or soft, you're going to regret the purchase. My friend gets a new couch every few years and spends very little on it. I get a new couch every 20 years and spend a lot (Ethan Allen custom). Depends on where your budget and decor frequency lies. I got a very tightly woven fabric. Have a nice long talk with your furniture person to get the type of fabric you want. It's not only if it's a "performance fabric", it's also how durable it is. If you want something that's indestructible, traditional tweed will do the trick. I used to have a cat, and he couldn't ruin it....See Moremimimomy
