Completely new to orchids...growing w/artificial light indoors.
Comments (5)I agree with Calvin. Not sure if I'd bother measuring the light but light can be tricky-- it may seem bright to our eyes but in terms of candle power. I am in a situation where I went from a house that had loads of sun light pouring into it to an apartment (moved because of my job and I could sell my house!!!) that has very little and so I chose to help out my plants with lights. I had to add quite a few of the more powerful bulbs to get what the plants need. The point is, we can work hard to replace what the sun can do but it may take a lot! With that said, if your system works, then don't fix it ;o) Ryan (I'm new to orchids, too, but grow loads of other plants inside!)...See MoreLight Can Stop Blooming?......... WHAT!
Comments (16)The problem is not as bad as you might think. As far as short day (long night) light sensitivity goes the Catt. labiata genes don't seem to stop blooming, just move it later in the season if the wrong type of light hits the plant. Commercial growers used to hang strings of 100 watt light bulbs over the plants to delay blooming in order to have flowers coincide with holidays. This is pretty intense light if you think about it. From a physiological standpoint all this type of light sensitive plant need is a very short duration of light at the right wavelength (red I think) at a fairly high intensity to set them back into thinking the days are still long. This is why moon light (blueish) doesn't cause problems, and why we don't generally have to worry about TVs, street lights etc. The experiments identifying the triggering mechanism were done on very sensitive plants (not orchids), but it is still a good idea to shorten the timing of your plant lights a couple of hours starting about now so the plants think the days are getting shorter....See MoreGrowing Cacti Under Lights
Comments (14)tjicken The sun room part will be structurally complete by late fall. Right now I am in the planning stages and am pricing different building materials. I am building this with my own two hands so I am only limited by my imagination so the possibilities are endless. I think this is going to be so cool my wife may actually finally accept this crazy cactus obsession of mine. I still want to find a suitable artificial lighting method so I can have a cactus here and there throughout the house as a sculptural showpiece....See MoreGrowing Tomato (& Tomatillos) from seed without artificial light
Comments (14)early ssabukis aliana goji faranji Awesome tomatoes! ESA is a cropping machine with loads of small yellow plums. Goji Faranji makes big wonking beefsteaks, sometimes they are a bit ruffly-but this I think is related to hotter weather and when it cools down a bit then the fruits are smoother. If you let GF mature completely on the vine it's incredibly delicious. It's fine too if you pick them a bit green and let ripen on the counter, but leave it on the vine until it feels like a baby's tushie when you squeeze it and you have tomato nirvana....See More- 5 years ago
