OT~What do you clean your dishwashers with?
Comments (47)I've had a couple of problems with my 10 year old DW recently, and got both manufacturer's (Maytag) and DW repairman's input. I also got some advice from my kitchen GC, for whatever that was worth. Sometimes grime can build up around the door gasket. Wipe down once in awhile. Seals are made of rubber; rubber will deteriorate. Best kind of detergent for MY dishwasher is powdered. Liquid leaves a residue on the sides and internal parts of the dishwasher that will build up over time. (YMMV depending on your DW age and brand, on this.) If one is having a problem with odor, run bleach through the machine ONCE according to the manufacturer's directions, but don't use bleach all the time (yes, it's havoc on the rubber gaskets). Read your manual, it should tell you whether bleach is OK in your machine. It may also tell you what the best variety of detergent is, for your machine. If you lost your manual, try finding another one by going to the manufacturer's website. (I lost my DW manual and was able to download a new one, free.) If all else fails, call your manufacturer (phone number should be on the website too). Use one repairman/repair company, so that they can keep track of service on your machine. My DW repair guy just told me last week - new DW's have a lifespan of 7 to 10 years. The older ones like mine have a 15-year lifespan. Mine has only been repaired twice - a rubber door gasket and a water valve - pretty good for a 10 year old machine, he said. DonnaR/CA...See MoreOT - How do you prepare for a carpet cleaning?
Comments (4)Yes -- move anything that you can out of the way (especially anything breakable!!) -- this will help to speed up the entire process! Not sure about bumpering the heavy wood furniture .... but certainly stand by "guide" the workers around the "non-movable" furniture ...... Perhaps be ready to open windows and doors to help "dry and air out" the rooms? Jan...See MoreOT: After remodelling is done - air duct cleaning?
Comments (22)I had mine cleaned last summer. I think there's a noticeable difference, and my friends with allergies seem to have less problems now. My house is old, I got it 3 years ago and who knows when they'd been done, if ever. When I took off my cold air return and other registers to have a look it was quite, um, gross. When they were all shiny and not gross, I was much happier. I probably won't do it after the reno though. I'm just changing my furnace filters weekly right now and so far, so good. The dust in the house seems to be settling or getting sucked up, so I don't feel like I'm breathing it in all the time. Tip: Take the vent cover off, stick a hand or vanity mirror into the duct with a small flashlight, angle the mirror so you can see down the duct and take a look. You should be able to tell if it's dusty and needs a cleaning....See MoreOT- I Love a Summer Rain
Comments (13)Here in GA it has been raining cats and dogs but it is starting to look like Maui here as Trail said so lush and 3D green. I still walk/run rain or shine. The last two times out I got so wet I could wring out my hair and clothes and stupid me had mascara on and it got in my eyes and I could hardly see where I was going. Two people stopped and asked if I wanted a ride, I mean it was coming down in sheets. But I couldn't dare get in their car soaking wet. But I will go again tomorrow if it is still raining. The only time I get a little freaked out is if it is lightning too. But the rain this time doesn't have lightning, it's soft and warm rain, but I think I will leave the makeup off, my eyes are still burning!!! I am sorry that all of the 4th of July festivities got canceled yesterday and all the fun outdoor activities at the lake. It is making summer seem kind of short! Otherwise, I have been doing lots of baking with the dogs, husband has been working in Wyoming for the past week but home now, yea!...See MoreUser
