Free H. callistophylla - did I get what I paid for?
Comments (14)For anyone who is new to ordering Hoya cuttings through the mail. There are a few things that can go wrong but they are not the fault of the sellers. When cuttings are packaged up and mailed out in a box or padded envelope they can experience dramatic fluctuations in temperature and humidity while in the mail. High humidity and high temperatures is all that fungi needs to begin attacking a cutting. Perhaps a dip in a fungicide solution would prevent this but not all sellers are going to go to these legnths. Also fungi are almost all opportunistic organisms although there are some species that are predatory on nematodes or that lure and infect insects. Because fungal spores are basically everywhere it is far better to fight fungal disease by adopting good cultural practices vs using fungicides unless disease has been diagnosed. A fan running in your grow space will do wonders to keep fungi at bay. For minor fungal infections cinnamon made into a paste with water works well. For serious problems there are chemicals such as Captan available but these are toxic and you should not use them unless you have to. Mike...See MoreAmazon - free ship over....$35?
Comments (19)Amazon Prime here too. I like that isn't easily found in nearby stores (like "antlers" for my dog, which are bones he chews on). And things like my cat's food, which is only found at the pet store, which is place I don't routinely go so as her food is getting low, I'm always forgetting to stop and get some. So nice to just go to Amazon and have it delivered to my door. Just last week we surprised our boys with tickets to the Redskins vs. 49ers game. Though we live in Redskins country, both boys are 49ers fans as dh is from San Francisco. One son has lots of 49ers gear, but other son doesn't. It was going to be FREEZING that night, so wanted to get my other son a 49ers sweatshirt that he could wear on top of many layers. Amazon Prime to the rescue - was able to get the sweatshirt in two days, just in time for the game! I didn't realize they just raised the free shipping from $25 to $35. Speaking of Amazon, did anyone see the story about Amazon on 60 Minutes last weekend? It was really interesting! Watching the way they have streamlined their storage facilities and how they pack items in boxes was down to a science. To Deee's point about finding the pool cover, one of the things Jeff Bezos (founder) said is that you can find nearly anything you need on Amazon now....See MoreOverdrive app - which devices are most compatible?
Comments (8)Vee, I greatly admire your resistance to both forms of punishment known as "treadmill" and "overdrive app". I tend to use them for an indoor combination of both walking and reading simultaneously which invariably leads to me becoming so engrossed with the latter, that I fall off of the back of the former. This leads to further embarrassment as while I am checked and fussed over by gym attendants, I am much more concerned with losing my place in the book. And while I confess that a comfortable spot full of natural light and pillows is much preferred, my insatiable appetite for chocolate ice cream demands that I make use of this medieval form of torture known, to some very few affectionately, as exercise. Comments (20)I have posted about researched transparency for eons. Especially sesame products. They seem to be the most recalled product on the spice isle. (i know it is not a spice but is often found there). I have posted once, sometimes twice a year. Two more investigations recently but mostly affecting europe and canada for now. And what to look for. Buy raw seed, from a trusted source, organic, and toast at home---low and slow to kill off bacteria. Make your own tahini and humus. Commercial tahini and humus are endlessly recalled. The investigation now is the chemical ethylene oxide. Ethylene oxide was used to inhibit the growth of Salmonella during the storage of sesame seeds in India. High-level contamination In September, very high levels of ethylene oxide were notified through RASFF in certain batches of sesame seeds originating in or sent from India and having entered the EU. Those results exceed more than 1,000 times the maximum residue limit (MRL) of 0.05 milligrams per kilogram for ethylene oxide set by regulation. Ethylene oxide is also not approved as an active substance for use in plant protection products.---HERE...See More- 7 years ago
