Do you shop online to be frugal? Share your fave deal?
Comments (24)I have been shopping online for ~10 yrs. The deals in the early days (1998-2001) were crazy. This was back when Amazon only sold books. Anyhow, I started shopping online because I was a single parent and had two small children. So it was a great convenience for me. I have bought almost everything you can online. Buying online now is almost second nature now and probably spend more than 10k a year online. I now buy online because of cost, convenience, availibility. I pay with CC for everything and haven't had any problems for 8 yrs. In the early days, I had people get a hold of my CC numbers and charge stuff. The CC companies took care of everything without much hassle. Technically, I don't know if the info was stolen online or from a local store. I wish the online grocery stores made a comeback. I would love the UPS guy to delivery the kitty liter, rock salt, soda, etc, while I just pick up the perishables. The best deals were probably in the early days with many items free with rebates and promotional codes, mostly computer or electronic items. The biggest amount saved would have to be on the biggest ticket items, furniture, hardwood flooring and other home improvement items, typically saving 20-50%. It also seem the higher end items have the greatest potential for the biggest % savings. I have had at least a dozen transactions over $1k....See MoreChristmas Shopping anyone???
Comments (17)We don't do a lot of gift giving anymore since the families have grown so much. I do buy for my 2 sisters and my Mom. And my husband for his mom. For our grandchildren and family we send one big check for them to either split up or use for a family gift. They love that. And it sure is easy. I have one present for one sister so far. I do start to keep my eyes open around this time of the year for good options. I like to get a selection of gifts for my sisters to make one big gift sack each. Since mom is in the care home not a lot she can have there so we are pretty limited. I always get a beautiful floral arrangement for her room, she loves flowers. I shop online as much as possible it is just so much easier for me. Being out in the crowded stores in a wheelchair is not a lot of fun. I have had people actually fall sitting into my lap because they were not paying attention or on the phone. And I have a BIG RED wheelchair LOL....See MoreWhere are you in your Christmas shopping?
Comments (20)DH and I ordered new living room furniture....our sofa and love seat were at least 30 years old and looked it. Not worth recovering. That is our Christmas present to each other. The only family I have left in this world is my sister and BIL and I have almost bought what I plan to get for them. Friends are almost done, I usually make their gifts. DH and I took on two families to look after from Project Share. We've bought their children's toys but still have to get a weeks worth of groceries for the families. We still need a little something for the parents. We will go out this week and get the canned and boxed food and give them $$$ for the turkey and fresh veggies. Each year DH saves his air miles through out the year and we turn it into grocery money for the families. We also save the Shopper's Drug Mart points and use that to buy the toys for Christmas. My sister also contributes to our families. We always have fun trying to see how much we can get with these points. This year we really did well with the point collecting and may even be able to take on a third family. We get to deliver what we bought which is always a lot of fun....See MoreHas anyone started Christmas shopping?
Comments (26)Satine, I'll be happy to share about Chanukah later today when I have time. I'll start a new thread. I like giving gifts. Getting them too, but that's the least of it, for me. I know a guy who does the guy Christmas Eve Christmas shopping because he just can't be bothered having to think of nice presents, so he goes to Walgreens and buys random stuff. A lot of As Seen On TV items. :) Some of them can be funny, and sort of the comic relief in a sea of presents, but he totally doesn't get the heartfelt part. I started buying the same thing (different colors/styles but same) for all those girls once they'd outgrown individually chosen toys and things. They're happy to have nice wrapped packages to open. I sent WrapSacks one year, cloth bags for presents, and they were disappointed not to have paper and ribbons. In the scheme of wasted packaging, a few wrapped presents aren't that big a deal and I save my eco-efforts for the poor sufferers at home. :) We always have a book and a toy for all the kids, and a book and something more grown up for the teens. At a certain point, the local kids drift into adulthood and get whatever little something the adults get. We make a big donation to the food bank or somewhere similar in honor of our family's get together, and just have a token beyond that for the adults. Last year, everyone got a Seed Gem in a little organza pouch. Pretty. Fun to open. Reusable. :) Each pretty hexagon box comes with a few seeds and a growing medium in a little plastic bag. You put the seeds in the medium, in the bag in the box, and water it as directed until you have a good start, then pull out the plastic and plant the whole thing, including the box. They have flowering plants and herbs. We do personal presents among the adults in the immediate family, and often draw names for one adult in the larger family. Nice things that we've chosen specifically to please someone. It's not about what someone can afford, but taking the time and interest to get or make them something nice. There's a price limit on the exchange, but I can always find something cool. I'm not expressing this well, on how to do it or anything, but one of my great joys is finding gifts for people that are intriguing and enriching....See Moremaddielee
