A couple of last minute questions before new computers arrive
Comments (10)I'm only going to respond to your non-router questions as I think you should have enough info in those other posts to make a choice. First, when your new computer is set up, plug in the new external drive to make sure it's recognized as part of that new system. It may have backup software already on it, so you could make a backup copy of your new system onto the external drive as your first step. Then, before you transfer any of the photo files, etc., to your new system, you could download and run Malwarebytes on the old computer as a precaution. Once you are sure your old system is clean, you can do your file transfer. Since you can't get your external hard drive recognized with your old computer, you'll have to do something else. If it were me, I'd get a flash drive of 4GB or larger (you can get an 8 GB drive on Amazon for less than $20). Then COPY as big a chunk as possible of those files onto the flash drive (DON'T cut and paste, as you want to leave a backup on your old computer at least until the whole transfer process is done correctly); then plug the flash drive into the new computer and copy the first batch of files to your new computer's hard drive. Then plug the flash drive back in to the old computer, delete all the files on the flash drive only, and reload it with a new chunk of files. Then load these on the new computer. Repeat until they are all loaded on to the new computer. Then, when you've transferred everything, you can copy all of them from the hard drive of the new computer to the external hard drive, which will then be your insurance policy. Second, if you have a 15 month subscription to McAfee, why complicate things? Keep it and run it. You can worry about replacing it with something else like Avast in 15 months. Just supplement it with Malwarebytes, but don't try to run another antivirus program like Avast at the same time. Also, having a router is a different issue from what ZoneAlarm software does for you. If you are running McAfee with its firewall, and occasionally running Malwarebytes, you should be fine. Also, because your knowledge of computers appears somewhat basic, ZoneAlarm may be a little sophisticated for you to make sure you are running it correctly. (I'm not trying to insult you, just trying to keep you adequately protected without making it unnecessarily complicated for you....See MorePlease walk me through transfers to a new computer
Comments (9)If the files on the Maxtor were put there by a Backup utility then they can only be Restored by the same utility. As Mikie said, this is doable but involved. Import / Export is normally the easiest, 'assuming' your email client supports that, otherwise you should be able to cut and paste. With the Maxtor on the XP machine it becomes the Destination Drive for the Export or Cut files. Once that is done, hook it to the Vista machine and it becomes the Source Drive for the info. All of this assumes a comfort level using Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer). halb...See MoreMoving data to new computer
Comments (11)there is this awesome little device called the tornado which makes doing that job very easy, you plug into each pc usb port and a split screen comes up for you to just move stuff from which ever one you want to move from or to. I did read it works with 98 with the install of it's driver, it works with out special drivers on all other windows systems. The Tornado Look around for better prices and reviews etc. I know I just saw one this week on a hot prices list for cheaper it may have been at ecost.com. The Tornado File Transfer Micro-Computer W/ FREE PC Eraser - 094922753861 that is it for $15 it looks like. it does say there it is 98 se compatible so you might check their website for info....See MoreWanting to get data off old, bum computer
Comments (17)I am going out of what's left of my mind... Rechecked the connections all is OK on that front. Tried to install drivers from miniCD that came with enclosure, but they were for Windows 98 only. Light does come on for enclosure when powered up. My computer sees a USB mass storage unit attached as it tells me this device would run better with a USB 2.00 port.(I have l.0, I guess) Device Mgr.says this device is there and working properly but it will not show up on "My Computer" to be accessed. I even went into DOS prompt and at random typed in various drive letters and after G:(CDRW) nothing clicked in..and I got up to the letter R:!! Just got bright idea...I am going to Nexstar website for clues...thanks for your input...keep it coming...bye for now....See More- 7 years ago
