got a new computer.... have some questions...

Well, my 4 year old Compaq tower bit the dust.... it started acting really slow and now Windows won't even load! I've been wanting a laptop for a few years anyway.... so I bought an HP Pavillion Laptop this morning from Best Buy.

The thing is, I would like to set up a wireless connection for it. I don't want to be tethered to the desk now that I have a computer that allows me more freedom. My question is about security. If I have a wireless connection, is it possible for other people to latch onto my connection and still my passwords or credit card or bank accont information? Is there a way for me to prevent it from happening? What about using WIFI at a public place... is that safe?

What virus scan program do you recommend? I have tried the free ones (Coomodo, and Avast), and purchased one called Defender Pro for my old machine (I installed them and used them separately, not simultaneously), but they slowed it down terribly. I want to protect the new machine, but I'm not sure how to. Of course this is a much newer comptuer with Vista (I've heard awful things about Vista, I'm almost scared of it) and the old one had XP so that might make some difference.

Also, how should I dispose of my old computer? I know you aren't just supposed to throw them in the garbage. And, how do I make sure my personal info is off of that machine before I get rid of it? Do I need to remove the hard drive and try to break it up with a hammer?

Thanks in advance for any advice you have to offer me!
