Our grandaughter wants to invite some friends for Thanksgiving...
Comments (15)Oh, this all brings back the memories when ex and I were stationed in San Jose - USMC. It was our first Thanksgiving away from home and family. I had told him if he knew of any "orphans" on the base that would enjoy a place to spend Thanksgiving, please invite them. He ended up inviting 20 Marines to my little, teeny apartment! What a riot that dinner was. "Who knows how to peel potatoes?" "Bugs, will you be the stirrer of the gravy?" "Chopper, help me get this bird out of the oven to baste......move over, Bugs." "Who wants to chop celery?" "Frenchie, you and your celery need to move off to the patio table on the deck. Please, stop playing with the dog until you're done." "Buggar, just put the freakin' sweet potatoes in the dish, smush the butter and maple sugar on it - marshmallows will go later if you don't eat them all." "MEDIIIIIIICCCC" Man, I was cooking with my oven, my micro wave, the BBQ and the oven in the motorhome. (Mental note to anyone who cares - Never turn your motorhome oven over to 2 Marines and a six pack of beer) It was the bestest dinner ever! Well,......not counting the pumpkin pie and, Tex, who fell off our second story balcony into the bushes below....See MoreThis is my LAST Thanksgiving dinner ever.
Comments (48)I also had a day which I am sure I won't forget. My family was together for the first time in quite a while and I was feeling so content. Almost finished with dinner when oldest daughter took offense at something my middle daughter said in jest and certainly not maliciously. Oldest daughter said very loudly that we all come and eat her food that she has prepared and then criticize her and the way she lives. She said if we don't like the way she is we can just stay home. We all sat in shock including her husband. He kept saying that we were just having fun and honestly and truly there was nothing mean or disrespectful said. She ended up leaving the table and when I tried to approach her she told me to leave her alone. We have had so much sadness and difficult times in the last few years and this seemed to be a special holiday. I just don't even know what to say to her and we are supposed to be going out of town tomorrow (me and her family). I am really heartbroken and I think this may cause a permanent split in the family. I never in a million years would have expected this from her and Im very sad. Caroline, I am so sorry-didn't mean to hijack your post. I do want to let you know I understand the pain and empty feeling you must have. Satine...See MoreHappy Thanksgiving to all my friends
Comments (34)Josh, they are similar sauces I suppose, I make the burnt caramel by starting with just white sugar in a heavy bottom wide pan and letting it melt, swirl/tilt pan (don't stir!) until it smokes for a half minute or so, it's really a read the color type thing after you've made it a few times. Then carefully whisk in heavy cream and then butter. I often add a split vanilla bean, and on occasion bourbon. Always have an ice water bowl within reach, it's very dangerous at around 350F!!! I knew someone that accidentally dipped his fingers in making a croquembouche. I enjoy deviled eggs too, they sound amazing with your homemade smoked paprika! Ohh you add lemon juice, brilliant! I'm going to try that sometime this week, I have plenty of eggs on hand (cheesecakes take a lot!) and newly opened jar of mayonnaise. Besides setting a timer for hard boiled eggs, I use one of those silicon color changing egg thermometer gadgets, love it. That's awesome you found someone, you sound very happy :) She's a lucky gal, as it's great when the guy can cook well and grow their own veggies!! ___ Bob, fantastic holiday decor. I love that massive store fireplace! Wow! That's my cup of tea, I would live in a stone castle, medieval style or Victorian style home over all this cookie cutter crap that they build nowadays. Ohh and great looking steak n' shrimp! This weekend I had that but much smaller at a Vietnamese restaurant in a bowl of Bún (rice vermicelli with homemade fish sauce). ____ Mike, it's so dark out! Think I may cave and buy 1 or 2 lights for the racks. Yep, Xmas will be here too soon, I keep it pretty simple and minimalist. How much stuff do people that already have stuff really need? I got my dad two used CD's from Savers, a Jackson Browne and Johnny Cash. That reminds me, I should make sure they play with out skipping. I got myself an old Celine Dion album too. I don't want to put up and decorate the Xmas tree. I can just see my crazy little kitty climbing through it with all those wires and then knocking it over. Really it is just more stress for me. ____ Jenny, I will look for your thread later, the red lime is intriguing and tempting! I figured see how I do with getting my four citrus through the winter before spending big bucks for that one. -Nancy...See MoreHappy Thanksgiving to my Canadian Friends
Comments (15)Thank you for your good wishes, folks. Our thoughts are with the folks of southern Manitoba, where a major storm, including snow and high winds, so serious and widespread that the premier has called a state of emergency, necessitating calling in skilled help from neighbouring provinces and Minnesota to help clear snow and downed trees and power lines: tens of thousands without power, they report. People were advised to avoid travel. ----------------- I'm extra thankful, for I was having trouble with words reduplicating, was dragged back to the head of the thread 3 or 4 times, then to Google offering several links twice, couldn't get back, started the story again, then to be told that I was going incognito. I decided that I must write one sentence, then post and come back to edit. Then I hit the button to show all that I had open, found the latest edition of my story, opened it, came back ... hit "Submit" ... and here I am ... ... editing! ole joyful...See MoreElizabeth
