Long living room dining room layout help!
We are finally ready to furnish and decorate our long living room but we are not sure of what the right layout would be. The couch we are getting rid of and buying new furniture, the tv stand may stay or go depending on layout and where the tv ends up being placed. We would like to put a dining table at the other end of the room but we are unsure of size and shape. The ceiling fan hanging will also be replaced. Thinking of keeping a couch along the windows, we want to optimize seating for when we have friends and family over. The fire place is also off center so a couch on the window side seems to work better, but open to any ideas! Overall Dimensions are Length 23 ft. 4 in. Width 13 ft 7 in. Thank you!!!

For the dining space, I would stick with a small, rectangular table. Because you have a doorway to the porch near the dining area and you want room to walk around easily, I would aim for something not larger than 60" long by 36" wide, but you can double check that in the space.

As for the seating area, if you want to maximize seating, I might aim for a couch with one or two chairs along the wall with the window. I notice when I have guests, everyone chooses a chair. Not everyone wants to snuggle up next to someone they don't know very well on a sectional. It is also easier to rearrange if you decide to change up the layout.

If you want to have even more options for seating, it might also be nice to do one or more ottomans that are cushioned and could be used for feet or as additional seating for guests. They could be grouped together or spread out when being used.

If you ended up replacing your coffee table with a/an ottoman/s, you may want to also add end tables so there is a place to set drinks, remotes, or lamps, if desired.

For an entertainment center, I would potentially choose something a bit more narrow to make sure it wasn't in the walkway, For instance, this entertainment center is 14" D so it is the same as the depth change in the wall so it could be flush. I can be clumsy and prefer to have things tucked away or I run into them!

Layout help for long narrow kitchen/dining room
Comments (13)consider this: Nothing goes on the wall where the garage is. 1 long counter along the long wall, and 1 long island parallel to it. For the counter and the island, go as far as you like ; whatever makes sense. Both the counter and the island are to be Narrow and Low. (e.g. 23" top and 21"d cabinets underneath); (e.g. 34"h) An all-drawer cabinet base makes sense in a narrow kitchen, because nobody ever has to get down on all fours. Ikea drawers fit in less than 21"depth. A 3/4" thickness quartz counter on top of a standard cabinet, on short feet, can make the height come in at less than 36"h. The two narrow coutners leave you with enough room to have aisles. One is the kitchen work aisle. The other is the passage from garage to hall to DR/LR. (b.t.w., is the hallway the only way over to the LR? Eliminating the pantry totally gives you a larger area of approach. Seeing your drawing, I cannot figure out how large the pantry is, btw.) . ((Leaving the pantry is ok, too. )) . The fridge could go in the corner where the long counter meets the garage wall. It would be accessible to non cooks if they use the passage aisle. Again, the cook or cooks get to operate in peace. Consider the idea, because it gives you a tight and highly functional galley, restricted to the operator. Nobody has to walk through it. The long island can be great for parties. At the end of the island can be a round, oval or square table. The lower the island counter is, the better it integrates with a table. Your kitchen like many others has a lot of constraints so the idea I've described just assumes that these constraints force the workspace to be a footprint about 7' by whatever length you choose to have. Many galleys are 7' wide, and are walled in everywhere. Yours is not walled in. This gives it a much more spacious feel. With some custom steel work for feet, you could have an island that has a kickspace on both sides, or is completely open underneath. Comments (1)With so many openings, paint color(s) are so wrong, as you have stated. With two focal points (fireplace and windows), choose one wall color. I can advise if you tell me from where natural light is coming from through the two large windows. You can leave the mirror. Good reflective possibilities. You can put a framed mirror over the mirror…kind of cool look. The t v and stand…are those yours? If so, move them to another room. I am perplexed as you are…why is there an opening by the fireplace wall into the dining room? Don’t know your budget, but I would spend the money to close that area?. Waste of wonderful floor space to allow for two chairs on either side of the fireplace. Your floors? Laminate? If so, you need a large rug to reduce noise. Back to your question…sorry. Comments (16)Definitely consider removing the wood door, or making it a pocket door for when you do need it. Then, among other things, you can put the TV flat on that wall, over a longer console, and add another chair facing the window. Also definitely subdivide the room into two zones, one with a grouping around the TV, and the other end for admiring the view, or reading, or chatting with friends -- a circle of chairs around a coffee table could be good, or else a book case and a reading chair (with lamp). 5 years agoWe decided on an extra long couch 108" width x 38" depth, now we are not sure if we should do a chair, 2 chairs or a love seat beside it. Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks! (chair that is there is from another room, it measures 37" wide x 36" deep)
