Comments (35)There's seeds inside those berries and they should germinate. Don't let the seeds dry out, most aroid seeds need to remain moist or they lose their viability. You'll also need to keep them warm as they germinate and grow, northern Victoria will get too cold in winter for them. If looked after the original tuber will also grow again in the spring....See MoreGrowing Artichokes indoors and out
Comments (1)Neither -- you won't have any success with traditional artichoke varieties like Green Globe or most of the Italian ones in our climate -- they can't overwinter outdoors and are too hard to overwinter indoors really without a greenhouse. I have had some success overwintering the roots by digging them fairly late (around Veteran's Day) and overwintering below the frost line in a deep pit lines with straw. What you need to do is plant Imperial Star or Emerald, the "annual" types that bloom the first year from seed following a vernalization treatment -- start seeds indoors in March, move the little plants outside in April so they get a good dose of chilly weather, then plant, and they'll bear artichokes from around late July into October. There are a lot of threads on here about this. Do a search for Imperial Star and they should come up....See MoreBringing Pepper Plants Inside for the Winter?
Comments (7)Hello all, There is a fantastic way to overwinter pepper plants -and- IT WORKS!! Thanks to fiedlermeister a member of this forum I was able to successfully overwinter pepper plants. I started with 3 plants but due to inexperience and too much water I lost 2 of the plants. The surviving Serrano has not only been vigorous but produced more peppers this year than in all of 2008. The experiment was so successful that this plant will be overwintered again this year for use in 2010. I have included a link below for a thread which details (photos there also) how it was done. DL Here is a link that might be useful: Overwinter pepper plants...See MoreBringing pepper plants inside for winter
Comments (4)I go in phases with bringing peppers in for the winter. At one time, I overwintered one for ( 3-4 ?) years before it bit the dust....( prob from neglect ). This year I went wild and brought in 10 or more plants. I never had a prob w/ aphids on peps before but this year I do. I have been dowsing them with alcohol spray to keep them in check....so far, it is working but I still see a few on CERTAIN plants. I have observed that my purple leaf peps dont get them . ( a fluke ? or do they dislike ? ) also, the aphids are a pink color.....sorry I have not been more specific with types or names for the peps, so far. Most of my peps were beautiful and strong this season...wish I could have said the same for toms..... ugh. ( live in Ohio, blight the past 2 years.....) Never had white fly prob.... the soil gnats I hang pcs of fly paper for.... but the yellow sticky traps get 75% more gnats !...See Moretapla (mid-Michigan, USDA z5b-6a)
