Are you quilting this weekend? Nov. 10-11

Hello from chilly Columbus! The sun is shining and I'm ready to get back to my sewing room. I am quilting my challenge quilt. The guild meeting is Tuesday and I'm half done with the quilting. I plan to finish it today so that I can get the binding done for the meeting. As I may have mention previously, the challenge is to use 10 orphan blocks to make something. I doesn't have to be a quilt. I think I have spent more time thinking about what to do than it took to make it. Although getting all the different sized blocks into the plan I made was time consuming.

So... that is my plan for the weekend. What are you sewing or quilting?

The chimney sweep was at my house last week. Fired up the wood burner this weekend. Worked on this...

I finished the log cabin blocks for the hospice quilt yesterday and put them together today. I have never randomly stripped a log cabin, but I like the way it is coming along.

There are snowflakes falling here! Aaack!

I have started some placemats for friends' Christmas gifts. Like Linda I am spending more time organizing fabric and looking at pattern possibilities than actual sewing. I want them to be special without a ton of work.

Yes, I'm working on the last assembly to a log cabin quilt. I've done pillowcases in this pattern, but wanted to have a full sized quilt. I had a few very large pieces of material I can't see using for anything else, and wanted to work them down in my fabric stash, so make it using those and they wouldn't have been my first choice. But you know how quilts are. Somebody would really like it even if it's not my cuppa tea. I have worked on it one to two hours a day since Sunday last, so essentially it will have taken me a week to do it because I wanted to try to do one entirely by chain stitching in an assembly line to see if it really does save time and still not be boring as heck. (I like the instant gratification of doing one block at a time). The answer is yes, it does save a lot of time and no...I wasn't bored silly. I have another quilt I sort of lost interest in because it was a humdinger hanging on the design wall. I have one more dresden plate to do, cut into quarters and use them as a cornerstone in each corner of the quilt and then I can assemble those blocks. This one is paper pieced and is one of those 'keepers' I'll spend time on, and prolly hand quilt. So........yes, I've been pleasantly busy messing around in the sewing room. We'll do thanksgiving on 'the day' at my my kid's farm. Over the river and through the woods etc. I'm cooking the bird, some pies and homemade noodles.

Linda, so sorry to hear about your SIL. I am sure it is very hard on your daughter - glad you will be with her. I am going to FINISH the last 2 months of the 2016 Block Lotto samples if it is the only thing I get done! I have month 10 cut & half way sewn. I need to pick month 11 and get it done. I have a couple smaller gift projects that need to get finished, but may not happen until next week. DS returns today from his work assingment in the UK (since May!) so we are looking forward to seeing him. His inlaws invited us to join them for Thanksgiving, so will be making 2 sides and a pie to take along on Thursday. It will be different not doing the whole thing here, but will be fun to share with the whole family.

Although I've thought about giving a guild a try I'm then reminded that one is supposed to PARTICIPATE! LOL! I would love to have some sewing friends just to hand out with and sew but then I would have to go along with all the projects and I'm not wanting to do anything except what I want to do. So I don't think they would want a big baby like me around. Donna, glad you were able to be around with the water heater going out to shut it down. About a month ago I had the TV on in the sewing room and went out briefly to fix a sandwich. All of a sudden I heard this loud whistling sound coming from there and went in and the picture was out and there was a horrible burning smell coming from the TV. I quickly unplugged it. Something in it fried. Don't know what would have happened if I hadn't been aware of something going on. DH looked at the back of the TV, the manufacturing date was 1998. That's pretty old. I bet the new ones wouldn't go that long. I might do some sewing, I've been having to do some un-sewing on this one because I've been watching the Tudors on Netflix at the same time and not focusing, I had to re-do 3 blocks because I forgot to put in some flying geese units in the middle of the blocks. On the third one I looked at it on the design board after pressing it and said "$&@* - I'm going to have to re-do this" and then noticed there were 2 more the same. I really cussed then.

It's Sunday night and this is the first chance I have even had to look at my computer - let alone quilt! It's winter (well, according to the mice) it is and we have been battling a few of those rascals who have gotten into the house. UGH. I think we have it figured out and we spent most of the weekend cleaning, bleaching, and filling a small crack in the foundation. We also tried to get the yard cleaned up and mowed before our next snow that is due in tonight. Our giant cottonwood trees just don't want to give up those leaves! It did give me a chance to toss a bunch of stuff I wanted to but DH thought we needed to keep. YEAH! Will have more time to quilt tomorrow night. I am looking forward to that! Sue

I am going to work on some scraps that I have lying around. As many of you know, I have been trying to tame my scraps for a few years now. I am getting closer to having them under control. I noticed I had some that will work well for 2.5 inch squares. I will cut them up to use for leaders and enders. It is cold here too. I might venture out to the grocery store sometime today.

We just got home from taking our cat Sami for her annual checkup. She’s fine! George had his a few weeks ago.

Today I plan to piece the backing for the memorial quilt. I’d really like to get it done this month.

Linda, please post a picture of your orphan block project!

I can't believe it. It was 11 degrees when I awoke this morning, and our bay had frozen over. This is the earliest it has ever frozen in the 20 years we've been here, and it's only 6 months and 9 days since it thawed last spring (one of the latest ice-out dates ever recorded). We have about an inch of snow on the ground, and we haven't raked our leaves yet. This is so crazy!

I hope to get some quilting done this weekend on my Strip Twist quilt. I did sew a label on a quilt last night. Does that count?

Donna, I will share a picture after the guild meeting on Tuesday. They will be judged by the members of the guild. Not really judged but they choose the winner.

I am stuck on how to quilt a Hunter's star block. I don't do feathers well and that is how most of the designs i saw are quilted.

It is cold in Colorado, too! I am not ready for snow, but it's possible tomorrow. We had dinner theater last night - The Roy Orbison Experience. Great music! Today I have to go to Denver for the Bachlorette party of the young lady I am making the fan quilt for. I have the quilt almost quilted - the two outside borders, then binding. Hopefully, I will get time on Sunday to finish it up since my football team has a bye week! (not that they are any good this year, but ... )

I'm trying to finish an overdue baby quilt. Most of the quilting is done; waiting on a ruler to arrive to finish the center and little corners. So, I moved on and finished the border, and sewed the binding on and trimmed. Unfortunately, I was distracted and sliced part of the folded binding on the corner when trimming so had to fix it.

Today I leave with the oldest for a college open house and will be in a hotel by myself tonight. So I intend to hand stitch the binding while watching Hallmark movies. (Hopefully the ruler will arrive before Tuesday so I can really finish it up!)

Bird bath was solid ice this morning, and a frosty car. Temp was about 28!! Looking forward to a snowy winter!

Cold here, too! It's suppose to be 50 on Thursday, so plan on doing the leaves then.

Looking forward to see your quilts, Linda, Sue and Jennifer.

I'll either make the pillowcases for DD or if other DD leaves the house, I'll cut out her apron for Christmas. I'm just itching to cut out some quilts for a 2019 quilting bee, but am forcing myself to wait until I have Christmas done.
