It is amazing, Kayla. As long as buyers pay the ridiculously high prices, the insanity will continue. And i's not only Pink Princess, prices on variegated philodendrons and monsteras in general have skyrocketed.

What were the prices pre craze? What sparked this?

Good point, but unfortunately Pink Princess has never been rare, in fact it's always been common. Any given day dozens can be found for sale online, many with the word "rare" in the ads. There was a short time when availability was down a bit, but then ordinary folks realized they could sell cuttings for $100 and up from the one they bought at $50, and the market was soon flooded with them. But you still see "rare" in the ads.

There seems to be no reason for the drastic increase in prices for variegated philodendrons and monsteras other than buyers trying to outbid each other. Somehow they've convinced themselves that a little plant with a little pink on the leaves is worth $250 or more. Or that a Monstera obliqua is really worth $3500. So trange, but the phenomenon continues.

I personally don't know about the market for this, but it is not like some sort of independent collusion to bring up the price. If people are buying, somebody will produce it cheaper to get the sales. More people have become aware of odd Philos, and have looked for them, so the price has shot up. I assume that the Pink Pricess is not easy to mass produce quickly because of the varigation.

Just saw some pretty thick well rooted "Mini Monstera" tetrsperma for $35, and smaller ones for $20. Still higher than other plants, but the market had time to produce them and did, after raw new cuttings were selling for more last year.

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma isn't variegated so will never command high prices, it's also fairly slow growing which makes it less common. Pink Princess is moderately fast growing, easy to grow, and is often prolific with offsets. I sometimes have clusters of 20 or more with half of those having good variegation, the other half with a fair amount of pink to none at all. Since offsets produce aerial roots quickly, propagation is easy. There's really no reason this Philo should get such high prices other than buyers continuing to bid against each other like it's the last one on Earth. It's sad that many buyers are priced out of ever owning one.

It's highly sought after because it's flashy. It's expensive because it's a lot of people want it, and then you get the people who want something because it is expensive. I don't call any plant that's readily available on Ebay or Etsy rare.

Right now between eBay and Etsy there are 52 Pink Princess' available, I noticed one was $485. So it's as common as dirt, although outrageously expensive. That said, the word rare has different meanings for different folks, so we should just agree to disagree.

Personally I think Strawberry Shake is prettier, has more colors, and is perhaps a stronger grower than Pink Princess. I said in a prior post here that I believe PP is a variegated Royal Queen and should have been named Royal Queen Variegata. Strawberry Shake should be called Red Princess Variegata, there's no difference between a reverted SS and Red Princess. But the names are established and too late to argue the point. Names in the plant world have been in chaos for decades, but far worse in recent years. Plants with the slightest difference from normal, or even temporary differences, get a new name. Mint comes to mind.

Yeah, I guess to me rare means a plant that is hard to find and rarely available to buy, even if you have unlimited funds.

I don't know if anyone has a PPP for sale or trade. Again, I'm still looking. Because the one person who responded only wanted to trade for 4 specific plants, none of which I have. If she had stated that here we wouldn't have wasted time going back and forth. Of course as soon as I said I didn't have any of the 4, crickets. My comment on this thread is what sparked the talk AGAIN. Yet I still haven't received my plant I've been searching for and my birthday is long passed now. I give up.

Stupidlazydog...I know ALLLLLL too well what is on Etsy and eBay. I was really wanting to do a trade or find one REASONABLY priced. eBay is NUTS. If you try to bid on plants...they have shills bidding the prices up. I have personally seen this on varigated Monstera Albo...for one node...and God forbid somebody is selling several cuttings with nodes only...no leaves. I know this because I have seen these sellers have someone with ZERO feedback, no history...brand new accounts...bidding the cuttings up several hundred dollars...to get it to the price range they want it at. It is NOT COOL! So it isn't JUST the crazy plant people who have no limits on their wallets...it is the sellers too...we ALLLLL know that people use eBay (especially) in order to price their items. Some even look at the asking price and decide that's what they're selling for/worth. Something I only worth what a willing buyer and seller can agree on. That applies to anything in life that someone would want to purchase or sell. Willing buyer, willing seller, agreement/compromise. I refuse to pay huge prices for plants. When people finally get bored with it or the market is flooded with them, then the price will come down. It is NOT a need...it is a want.

well i think that the rare house plant market is going to be here for a long time. Growers also do not release rare plants all at one go to keep the rarity.

Mike... Most plants are NOT RARE. Even those that sellers list as rare...I'm sorry but if I go into a place like Etsy or eBay and can find dozens of them, they're not rare. They're just overpriced. And there will always be a black market so to speak for plants...growers aren't the only ones propagating. You can go into any social media group and find people selling or trading so called rare plants. So we will just have to agree to disagree. Because sooner or later people will get bored with it and there will be enough black market growers, traders and propagators making it available that it will become very common. As a matter of fact, Costa Farms is one grower who is taking the rare plant and turning it into something most people can find and afford. Remember when Raven ZZ was "rare"? Not so rare anymore. It can be found pretty easily by anyone. This doesn't mean it is as common as Golden Pothos, but, it is not "rare". 🤷‍♀️

Well if it is highly sought after then it becomes rare. personally i am ok to pay the price if i really like a plant

Personally, I don't think being highly sought after and expensive makes a plant rare.

Watched one of them. Learned nothing. Simply a list of plants rating them regarding how available they are in the marketplace. Oh, I learned what Hoyas she does not like (based off of photos she'd seen on line). So important to know.

What's rare in Europe (where Kelly Ellen lives) might be different in the US and vice versa. There's plants there that I can't even find here (California) that are for sale in the UK, such as the Calathea Majestica 'White Star' so these plant indexes are really based off where you live. If you live in Indonesia, Thailand, Brazil, South America or even Florida, some of these rare plants aren't rare.

Oh, I realize that what's hard to find in Europe may or may not be hard to find in other parts of the world, and vice versa, but I can't say I actually learned anything about the plants from the video.

You can find Calathea White star pretty easily in the states, it’s fairly common.

Yes I seen Calathea White Star online from Florida last month and have one now but it’s not fairly common at all in my area in California. I have not seen any locally in any nurseries or private sellers.

actually it's not C.majestica 'White Star' or C.ornata . It's C. vittata.

PPP is not "rare" at all, it's just scarce per the sudden demand. One reliable grower now has a waiting list of 5000+. The demand is high because it's an "It" plant, a celebrity plant on Instagram and Pinterest. So everyone living the plant lifestyle suddenly wants one. Then the grower raises the price when it cannot meet demand to whatever people will pay. Personally I'm not a fan, the pink looks like raw chicken meat to me. But the price will come down and the hype will be over soon enough, although they will probably never return to their previous $10 price, but I'm sure in a couple of years plants will be going for ~$45 or so. About two years ago, pilea peppermiodes where as high as $75-100 for a 4" pot, and these are prolific and extremely easy to propagate. Now the hype is over, so nobody is paying those huge prices and plants are easy to come by for $10. The hype around PPP will die down, also.

Has anyone actually answered anything about why the leaves are turning burgundy? I can’t seem to find a straight answer anywhere , just people asking for prices .

HU-231093465: Pink Princess is notoriously prone to reversion. It sounds like that may be what happened to one referenced above.

Thanks for chiming in Justin. The reverted ones look exactly like Royal Queen except for a narrow strip of pink along the edges of winged petioles. Also, in my experience variegation usually starts going away the bigger they get. Small ones often have pink on every leaf. Best thing to do on large ones with little variegation is cut the top off leaving 2 or 3 nodes on the base. New plants from those nodes have a good chance of being variegated.

Thank you so much for your time and both of your very helpful answers . I recently ordered a pink princess online that was green in the photos but arrived black with a little pink veriegation on the underside of a couple of the leaves .

If it's a small plant you might not see any better variegation. You can take off the tip and see if the nodes below it will produce a plant with some color.

Again, Royal Queen is a fairly rare philodendron these days and a reverted Pink Princess seems to be this plant. I see no difference between the two. Strawberry Shake is also prone to lose variegation and there's no difference between a reverted one and Red Princess. So to my mind, these should have been named Royal Queen Variegata and Red Princess Variegata, respectively. That said, especially in the case of Strawberry Shake, sellers think a flowery, pretty name sells better than a simple "Variegata", so they slap them on without regard for correctness.

@PoohBearLvr I know this is older, but I know RXACTLY what you’re referring to & it’s definitely not the same as reverting. I think you nailed it w the light thing, as odd as it sounds!?! I had heard comments about (ideal conditions), but hadn’t experienced issues w mine~they’re in custom soil, love humidity in SC apr-oct & rotate light in winter, get Liquidirt w every watering (which resulted in lots of growth all last winter), but my 3 wound up split up by happenstance. My favorite, one that is black & hot pink marbled on every leaf was repotted first this year, & back to shelf in front of bay window w am south sun. The other 2 were moved under the crepe myrtle w others for repotting or living all summer. Got busy before my daughter’s wedding so hadn’t gotten to them when a hail storm happened, so a handful of plants most harmed by damage were rushed into the garage, where the door often stays open & the first 2 feet start to get east sun around noon until sunset. One went further back while the other was among the first line safe from direct sun. Both had a couple of green leaves but most had very nice markings. One kept most of its pink while the other lost all, including a half moon. The new leaves weren’t even the darker burgundy but a more coppery color

side note… @Russ1023, I think I’ve read many of your posts on another site~do you have a lot of Aglaonema? Have meant to message you for over a year, but I’m awful w email & avoid to extremes. I think you probably have a LOT more experience & knowledge than me, but I respectfully disagree w the idea that Royal Queen & reverted PPP (often Burgundy Princess) are the same. I am obsessed w dark leaved philos/plants, in particular garnet/burgundy colors, so having spent the last couple of years attempting to track down as many as possible, & RQ near top of my fav list, they’re definitely different plants. I’m confused about RQ’s origins for sure, supposedly listed as Fl but no idea who? You said it’s been around for a long time, but I’ve seen it referred to as “a new hybrid” repeatedly the last maybe 2 years now, & can’t find it now but saw many times in my searches a site that gave a teensy bit of info & called it also “New Red?” Or new red Queen~don’t remember exactly but did search it a little & found numerous overseas places selling as either/or names. Though admittedly, every time I think I’ve figured out & can identify the different dark leaved varieties, something makes me question it or I’ve discovered one not circulating readily these days. So, idk~your position is certainly logical yet I easily see 2 different plants (RQ got much larger leaves much quicker for example) I thought the heat possibly affected my changing ppp as it happened as we hit mid-high 90s daily, & her living in S Fl affirmed…until yours. Central Fl would be the same, so must be the light?!?

It’s inside now, so we’ll see~the stem is streaked in hot pink so the genetics are undeniable! Forget now how much light yours was getting, but can’t help but think the daily proximity to direct sun, 80%, mine was experiencing like 80% of daylight hours didn’t bump the temp that much more, & maybe more importantly, all the humidity under that tree was cooked a bit right there, & probably needed water a little more considering. I think obviously genetics are key, but having rescued “reverted ppp” previously to produce consistent color, I’m convinced amount of light (less than many), humidity, temp of course, & nutrients make a difference. You won’t get pink back on the leaves that turned, but the new growth should be back to normal if it’s happy. Haven’t had one get that large yet but have heard they tend to produce less color w size, & cutting back to color is recommended, but I’ve seen pics of mighty specimens still putting out pink~maybe not as often but enough to not chop if size is an interest too.

With that said, as I suspected~when travel, ie shipping opened again, so many wanted to import themselves to enjoy lower prices that prices on many things have continued dropping since July~so affordable, or more affordable w decent color, ppp are everywhere! And I’d imagine everyone asking here got theirs by now, but if not…& i didn’t charge more than $75 thru the entirety of last year’s insane pricing! And take pics as I cut to prop so there’s no question what plant it’s actually from.

Heather, I would be happy to send you a Royal Queen and a reverted PP so you can compare. The only difference I can see is a reverted PP often has a thin pink stripe along edges of winged petioles. Otherwise they're identical. Yes, I have a very large collection of aglaonemas.
