Info and Advice on Food Allergies? (and a shoulder:)
Comments (16)I'm sorry you are going through this....but for a Dr to decide to do an allergy screening because of a single hive on her chin, AND to tell you that she is allergic to all thses things seems way WAY too out there. Please get a second opinion...I suspect that a certified allergist will pooh pooh the whole thing when you tell him why and how the testing was conducted. I am an "allergic person"...have...had all sorts of allergies. I have tested positive and negative to all sorts of things like corn, ragweed, certain foods etc....and periodically I will get a few idiopathic hives...mostly when there are other stressors like a sinus infection...or a lot of mosquito bites.I have a friend who is an allergy cripple....she looks normal, but spends a week at a time at an allergy clinic and avoids all sorts of things like beer, freshly made bread ( but day old bread is good as is wine!) etc etc etc... Someone told her she was highly allergic to "something" and she has searched until she found someone who will corroborate those findings. Get a second opinion....and perhaps a third opinion. Allergies are very scary, I am allergic to Penicillin to a dangerous degree and my Son in Law to fish....once! he ahd a reaction needing a trip to the ER...but has managed to eat small amounts since...(what a dummy to even try it!)...allergies come and go. Get at least one more opinion....probably 2 more. No need to make Grace an "allergic kid" because one doctor found a bump on her chin! Linda C...See Moredoes anybody...(food allergy question)

We are allowed to bring homemade treats to school we just have to be carefull as to what is in it. I ended up sending in string cheese and whole grain club crackers. We individually wrapped everything and sent the treats in little party bages with a gold medal to go with it (DS wanted to to do race cars as his show and tell so we sent in medals for all the kids). I sent the lables in also so that the teacher coiuld double check everything. The kids liked the little bags and DS was happy to be able to give his friends "presents" as he put it. And I was happy to have found a healthy snack to send in. So many parents send in junk food and I hate it. I try to feed my family healthy stuff as often as I can and junk food is an no no in my house. Thank's again you everyone I really appreceiated all you r help. One brand of cake mix has it on the label for both yellow and chocolate cake. Then of course, all the red and pink things like jello, candy, some jelly, canned cherries, cherry pie filling, many toppings, ice cream, mixes with artificial berries. It's everywhere. A small percentage of people can taste red dye and it gives food a bitter taste to them. I am one of those people, so I have never been big on eating "red" things that other people think taste great. That is probably why I am not dead. I remember getting sick as a child on a desert that had red jello in it, and once ended up in the emergency room after taking a common (pink) med. In those days, I think I had to get a lot of it before I had a real problem. I always had problems after I would fly because I always took a pink motion sickness pill. I didn't know that everyone else didn't have gas, bloating, and diarrhea after flying. LOL Since I tend to get dizzy easily I had taken a lot of pink motion sickness meds before I discovered Meclizine. Also check any kind of vitamins you may take. Beware of anything red, pink or orange. I do really well most of the time, but occasionally when eating out I will get something without knowing it. If I get very much, I will have severe cramping within minutes. I practically live in the bathroom for the next two hours because my system will just try to "flush" it out. In addition, I have pains in my heart. During a very serious attack I will just be freezing and can't get warm. I sit in a hot tub of water, and keep running it hot until I finally warm up. I shake like I am having a siezure. Do you do any of these things? When it started to get so bad about 10 or 12 years ago, I thought I had some serious stomach or bowel disorder. Then I would get better and be fine for a few days, so I would think well, maybe not. If it does turn out that it is red dye, we are not alone. More and more people each year and learning that it bothers them. I am not a drinker, but I read an article about a lady being taken to the emergency after having a drink with grenadine. I hope this is not what is wrong, but at least if it is, you can control it. You will have to give up a few things, and maybe prepare more things from scratch, but you will soon learn what to avoid. Good luck. Carol...See MorePet Food for Lab with Allergy

The decision to go raw was made because of the itching, scratching, licking biting, shedding, sneezing and other issues that she was going through and the vet could not provide a reason for the symptoms and would just provide to us advice and meds. I have found after food trials and product eliminations that she cannot take any of the Dry Kibble, Canned Food, Treats, Biscuits, Heartguard or Flea Preventatives, nor can she use most of the shampoos on the market. I feed Natures Variety Raw. We kicked everything to the curb and went cold turkey. My first choice was the Rabbit. She licked the bowl clean and the symptoms were gone almost immediately. I would say within the week the symptoms calmed down. I also learned that when you mess with the omegas in the foods by adding something such as a fish oil, you mess with the balance of the omegas. The best thing to do is find a meat based food with balanced omegas and if you choose to add additional omegas choose one that is balanced. I chose to use Ultra Oil with omegas 3-6-9. Yes, there is a 9. Who would have thought. All and all, after almost a year of food trials, my girl is eating raw, getting oil'd up for a healthy skin and coat and is using Dinovite Canine as her supplement and I will not change a thing for as long as I can help it. Oh! I forgot to mention that because I do not use a flea preventative, i do bathe my girl more often now. How is her coat and skin you wonder? Her coat and skin are great. They say bathing too much will strip the coat and skin of essential oils. Well heck...why not use products with essential oils. I use Dr. Harvey's Shampoo and Dog-O-Suds from Dinovite. Read up on Natures Variety, Ultra Oil, Dr. Harvey's and Dinovite and even check up on the website for the Great Dane Lady...all websites helped me alot. My girl is due for her annual next week and I can't wait for the Dr. to see her. If you want to discuss, give me a shout. kreshalp@yahoo.com...See More- 7 years ago
