Kiwi I'll share a pic of our new garage doors. Our windows are also black and I had originally wanted stained garage doors but found these instead. Martin pinnacle line they function beautifully. Just installed last month. I am staining my fiberglass doors. I did the front doors and used Zar stain in moorish teak but went over it with Cetol finish that had an oak stain. So far everyone has had positive comments on the black doors. We still are under construction with gravel and dirt everywhere and other than the bird poop don't collect much dirt...

I prefer the lights to be beside the door. YMMV

Sounds like what you want is a sort of line-voltage OR gate. You could use two 120v coil SPST continuous duty relays. They'd need contacts rated for the light's peak current. Careful, electronic ballasts and LEDs sometimes have large startup surges. Each relay's coil is connected to a cord and cap. One is plugged into your GDO and the other into the garage light. The relay contacts are connected in parallel with each other, and then the pair of paralleled contacts is connected in series with a cord and cap to the light. Wwhen either source is energized, its relay pulls in and supplies power to the light. Not sure it's worth it, though. To do it safely would probably cost you at least as much as buying a second light as Mike suggested, and would be kind of "Rube Goldberg." But if you want to try it and the above description isn't clear, I'll draw you a diagram.
