Drywall texture for new drywall next to painted wall

Hello! We just installed new drywall in our kitchen, and one wall will be next to an already painted wall (corner for fridge). I am a little confused about what to do next. I have sanded and smoothed the painted wall, which appears to have no texture just serval layers of paint. Do I have to do a skim coat over the painted wall prior to texturing or can I do one of the following:
a) texture everything (new drywall and painted wall) and then prime and paint, or
b) prime everything (new drywall and painted wall) before I texture so my texture is on the same surface, then prime and paint, or
c) is there a better way?

If the existing walls have no texture, why are you texturing the new work?

It's not clear where this corner is located, but if it's mostly hidden by a refrigerator and cabinets for example, maybe you don't need to worry.

I recommend the Zinsser for the entire job. For best appearance, I always sanded existing walls with #180 sandpaper, primed and two topcoats. Michael

If you do some digging, you'll find that texture is a very regional thing. Orange peel is pretty 'downscale' here in the Rockies: every house had it 30 years ago, so people doing new homes want something different. I've never seen one called 'hand' texture, but 'imperfect trowel' sounds similar. It's 'not quite smooth' with some areas showing quite a bit of texture, others almost none. Its quite the rage round here-- even I'm going to use it, despite an severe alergy to all things trendy. Has kind of an aged look. The other big trend is smooth [standard in some regions, an upcharge here]. Costs more so it must be better. No, that's not fair: I find it boring, but a lot of folks feel any texture at all just too busy.

How to match texture of existing wall with Drywall Patch

I made repair to the wall and sanded it smooth. BUT my wall has a slight texture to it. When I painted the wall, you can totally tell it was patched over. I'm using an eggshell sheen and it looks silly o_0 How do I achieve the texture below? At home depot they recommend have this orange peel spray product, but I think that is too much texture.

You prime the new wall, then paint both. Because the new drywall hasn't been painted before, you may notice a slight difference in texture between the new and old wall, but that will disappear once your kitchen is complete.

Thank you for your comments. I suppose we don't have to texture. Because the already painted wall has so many layers of paint it looks slightly textured so my fear is the new and old walls won't look similar at all. I think I will prime both walls and then asses how similar they look. At that point, I can still decide to texture if I want to, right?

The choice to texture walls, and the type of texture used, is regional. We live in Northern Virginia now, where most older homes never had texture and it would really look out of place to use it. When we lived in Texas it was hard to find a home without texture. The more expensive houses used an orange-peel texture that was quite flat, while cheaper homes used a much rougher texture.

My opinion is that texture was used to cover up the errors of marginally skilled wallboard finishing crews. The rougher the texture was, the more it hid the poor wall finish. The walls in inexpensive spec houses felt like sandpaper, even after they were painted.
