Awww, that is really tough. You're right, if she's determined that she's ready to go, there's not much you can do about it. I know I read your post the other day but I cannot right now remember the reason for her condition. I'll say a prayer for you and Sherry both.

I'm sorry. I think it's a normal thing with aging. My dad quit eating much years before he passed away. He was down in the 120s before he had a stroke and by the time he passed away he was in the 90s. It's hard to deal with this. Seen lots of my patients do this too.

I am sorry but I will say that dying is the hardest thing we all do and each of us knows for ourselves when it is time. It is a natural part of the process to no long want food. You embrace where she is and love her and care for her and you can be proud of really being there for her. She might perk up and that is a gift if she does but your giving her your permission to do what she needs to do has to be the biggest gift you can give her.

So very hard to do. And one of the reasons a living can be so important.

Rob, I'm so sorry you and your mom are going through all of this. I know it's not easy. Sending you thoughts of patience, courage, comfort and strength as you deal with your mom's situation and condition.

Rob - so sorry to hear your dear mom is not doing well.

Thank you for all of your kind thoughts, words, and prayers. In doing something, all I'm saying is, we are trying to arrange for people to see her, rather than her getting out to see them, and hopefully make her at least a little bit happier. I just think that she would be a lot less depressed if she took her medication, but I'm not really sure it would help her enough for her to be where she wants to be. Or where we want her to be. Aging is really hard to accept. For all of us. She is just such a social creature, and can no longer drive, or get around like she wants, so she's stuck inside not seeing people, and not doing anything. This is one instance I think assisted living would help, but not because she's physically unwell, although she is, but she would get to see people and interact. Her essence is gone. She loves and cares about people, but has no people now. It's got to be hard for her, no doubt.

Rob, I am sorry to hear what you are going through with your Mom. It sure would be nice if she could get into assisted living because it would give her a bit more social life or play cards, or do crafts if she does those things but she would be around people. "Her essence is gone" Those were the words I used to use describing my Mom who had Alzheimer's. I hope your Mom finds peace of mind.

Prayer just said that God's will be done.

robb if you mother is not eating she probably is needing a nursing home rather than assisted living. Your comment about being around people is one of the things my husband enjoyed about being in the nursing home. Until he became worse he would greet everyone as they came down the hall no matter who they were. While he was unable to stand for the first about year and a half he and a group of ladies would sit in their wheelchairs and have chats. Most of the time no one knew what any of them were saying. They were enjoying themselves.

If you can find one I would like to suggest your sister who is caring for her check into respite care at one of the homes. You would need to check on your mom's and your sister's insurance but a few do provide respite care as part of the insurance. This would provide your sister a break and perhaps perk your mother.

I am so sorry for your painful situation, Rob.

You and your entire family are in my prayers. An aging parent is such a difficult situation for everyone involved.

We were able to get my MIL to begin taking medication she thought was "unnecessary" by this method. We suggested that everyone is different and that she try taking the medication for 30 days. If she/we saw improvement in her condition, perhaps it was is necessary, but it would be her decision whether or not to continue taking it. If there was no improvement, we were in complete agreement that it was unnecessary. She was so sure she could prove us wrong she readily agreed to the trial. But...the medication truly improved her quality of life dramatically and she is happily continuing to take it!

Rob, I wish you and your family the strength you need and an armful of sunflowers and am thinking of you. It'[s hard to let go. My mother said "Let me go" refused to eat and after she was given a feeding tube, pulled it out. Hard as it was, we let her go. I am older than she was and my family knows what to do if I my time is coming.

Oh man Rob, so hard for you. You have my prayers. It is a blessing that we have the KT. Everyone is so supportive and caring.

My MIL decided to enter a nursing home when her RA became so advanced that she needed assistance just to turn in bed. She improved within weeks, largely because she was no longer isolated in her apartment. I don't think she even realized she'd been prescribed a mild antidepressant, but that helped too. (We were ALL helped by the change.)

I am so sorry for your situation, Rob. I went through a similar experience with my dad. I felt so helpless and sad. Sad is to be expected when you lose someone you love, but helpless is worse, especially when you can see another way. Peace.

Rob so sorry you are dealing with this and watching your mom fail. Take help from others when offered. It helps everyone.

Biggest bro is going to meet us at church this upcoming Sunday so I assume it'll be a less formal "intervention" and more about assessment. Mom lives next door to the church and we'll "drop by" if she doesn't attend. We three will be as gentle as we can.
