Fall color 2015 thread
Comments (137)One advantage of "Mexican Dogwood", Cornus florida subsp. urbiniana, besides the odd looking flowers: it is extremely late to color. Which, in my climate that seldom has a freeze before Thanksgiving, is OK. Other dogwoods have already dropped most of their leaves and this is just starting to color....See More(Not El Cerrito) Celebration of Old Roses 2018 Is Next Sunday!
Comments (22)It was great to meet and talk roses with Anita, Catspat, and Romogen yesterday! Highlight of the event for me was Anita's talk about the cemetery and its roses We got to see and smell Bloomfield Abundance (the one now thought to be *real* -- which resembles Mlle. Cecile Brunner not one bit) and the lovely Jesse Hildreth, among others, and learn the stories behind some of the amazing roses of the garden. Now I want to go back again. Some of the roses on the display tables that made the strongest impression on me this year were Jaune Desprez, Henri Martin, and Clementina Carbonieri. Incredible fragrance and loveliness, all of them. And oh my, the albas and gallicas and on and on . . . . I was very interested in Etoile de Hollande and spent some time searching for it at Miriam's booth, with Romogen's help; it turned out to be the climbing version, which I had to pass up, sadly. Nancy, I'm glad you took one home with you! I was pretty good overall and bought only Mons. Tillier. I have no room for him, either, but I weakened. I do love that rose, so . . . . I was very sorry to miss hearing Gregg speak, but as I was the only person who showed up at noon to hear him, it wasn't to be. Maybe next year. Comments (11)To do a wood surround like that, your Kitchen Designer will need to duct the air flow generated by the insert to somewhere. You’ll need a duct and exhaust grate similar to a HVAC return, positioned either at the top of the hood, or ducted 90 degrees through a wall into an adjacent pantry or utility room. Since tecirculating does not typically provide the air flow that a ducted hood can provide, you will also end up with more effluent on the surround and cabinets. That means more frequent cleaning, and the possibility of damage to all of the surrounding wood surfaces over time. That is why that most who need to do recirculating end up with a stainless under cabinet hood or stainless chimney hood, as it will withstand the care regimen better over time. Function rules over form. Be sure that the hood capture area is wider and deeper than the cooking zone below, as that will help with capture and cleaning both. Finally, consider the scale of the kitchen and ceiling height both when designing the kitchen. Most large mantle hoods appear overbearing in a smaller kitchen with a shorter ceiling. A 30” range often appears dwarfed by the typical proportions needed for a mantle hood. Be very careful here, and be sure that your KD helps you to visualize this through their software. It’s a pretty significant upgrade expense over a stainless hood, and you do not want to have regrets....See MoreBuilder won’t replace faulty and wrong color brick
Comments (21)Well our problem with them is it’s not the original brick we wanted, we specifically said we wanted the Arctic white, and we showed them a house in the neighborhood that had the brick we wanted, and they told us the type of brick that house had, so we chose that during the contract. You noted in your OP, "to our displeasure we noticed once the brick was placed up to 4 feet on one of the walls, it wasn’t the brick we ordered. We had a discussion with the building supervisor and they agreed to give the upgrade fee for the brick back in closing money. We agreed to take it and settled on brick that’s not what we wanted." You settled... You generally don't get to agree to something and then decide that you don't like what you agreed to, that settlement is a contract. An offer and acceptance for an exchange of consideration that has mutuality of obligation between parties with capacity. If the brick is faulty then you have recourse available to you, but you should be careful referring back to what you wanted before you agreed to the refund. As for whether or not staining will work, that depends on what the industry standard is. If the brick looks substantially similar to what you agreed to and has the warranty I suspect that is going to be all that is "required." Not to say you can't get more with the right application of leverage....See Moreghatta
