Design Dilemma Metalworking Woodworking

Any suggestions for contemporary stair railing?

We have a straight 9' section at the top of our stairs we need to put a railing on. This will be a showpiece on our main floor and we don't want traditional colonial style wood railings and are looking for ideas. We thought of a horizontal stainless steel design, but are worried kids would try climbing it. we're not sure that we want a cable system and we haven't fallen in love with glass. Look forward to your suggestions!

Hey there! Here's a few contemporary stair rails we've recently done to give you some ideas. Let us know if you have any specific questions on them. We always understand the concern with horizontal railings, but it is possible to still have a clean, modern look with vertical!

We've also included a picture of a blackened cable railing! What are your hesitations on cable rail?

How far is it from the window to that nearest post in front of the window? If it is not too wide a distance, I think the idea of placing a set of steps between the post and the window is your best bet. If the steps will be less than 44", I think you can get away with only having a handrail on one side... the side away from the window. (Check with your local building code to verify the maximum width stair allowable without requiring handrails on both sides.) Then, if the steps are wide enough, place small potted plants along the wall-side of the steps and no one would ever wonder why there is no railing on that side and therefore will not notice that the window would have gotten in the way of a railing.

Hi, When I finished my cabinets I used a pore-filler so the stain would not go into the pores and add so much emphasis. The brand was called "Pore-o-pac". It takes a lot of effort to apply, but it keeps the grain tamed. Pore filler minimizes the stain's penetration in general, not just the pores, so you'll need a few more coats of stain to get it dark. The post I mentioned would not be at the bottom tread so the design of a continuous handrail would have to bypass the post to get to a newel at the bottom tread and there would need to be a guard at the new opening whether it be solid, balusters, etc. At first glance it seems a potentially messy solution. Perhaps the handrail could be at the other side and the guard could terminate at the post. The bottom tread should have had returns at each side. Its looks like a abasement stair in the entryway.

Black handrail would go with black balusters. However, I don't see them going with your house at this point. That little bit of black is such a contrast with the white/beige you have going. Have you thought through how the black will look with the rest of your space as you are planning it? Without any more information, I would paint the handrail and post white. And use white balusters. ETA Wait a minute -- I just realized that this is not your house. What does your space look like? That will change everything......

It's under construction at the moment, so you'll have to imagine what it's going to look like. Flooring will be white wood look tile and the hall will be carpeting to match the stairs. The 14 light chandelier will be hanging centered over the stair opening. The walls will be painted light grey to match the hall walls. From the front door (entry is red) you will be able to see the railing.
