Sewing Room = Starting from Scratch
Comments (10)How exciting for you to be getting your own space! It's really a nice thing to have. I was fortunate enough to get a craft room in my new house (which I insisted I get the SW corner of the house for maximum light). I outfitted it with cabinetry in a U shape, similar to how my office at work was laid out. It has a closet for storage. In addition to shelves, I had a box built into the corner of the closet to hold bolts of fabric upright. (Can't see it in the pic...it's to the left of the closet door.) I kept the old maple dining room table which is on wheels and has a flip top, so I can flip it down for cutting and layout, then flip it up and roll it against the wall when I don't need it. I had the electrician put the outlet for the iron on a switch so I can just flip the iron on and off as I'm back and forth when I'm sewing, rather than have to do it with the dial on the iron. (In the middle pic, you can just see the foot of the ironing board...it's on the left as you enter the room). I also was sure to have room for full length mirror on the wall. The flooring is a heavily cushioned sheet vinyl that is very durable, very easy to clean and soft under foot as this is in our lower level and is on the foundation concrete floor. I had the electrician put in a lot of light as well as it's a work room. We also bought an armless office chair that adjusts in height and leaves my arms free for maximum movement....hate it when fabric gets caught on an arm or the arms get in the way and you can't pull the chair in close enough. Please keep me posted on your room...I'd love to see how it turns out....See MorePlease help me put this family room together!(pics)
Comments (5)You have a very pretty room with a lot of potential. I really like the color and the natural light. I think the piano could be a beautiful focal point. Will it fit between the windows? If so, move the piano between the two windows and put the collage frame over the piano. Move the sofa in front of the window wall and the large blue chair perpendicular to it with the back facing the edge of the wood floor. Then put the ottoman in front of the sofa and chair as a coffee table. Put the entertainment cabinet on the large wall with the wood chair in the corner near the window and the leather chair about where is currently is. I would also move some of the accessories from the top of the entertainment cabinet to the top of the piano - maybe the red vase and a basket. I think the basket table is too light feeling for the other furniture. If it needs to stay in the room, I would move it to the far side of the sofa so it is not as visible from the room's entry point but it will still be functional as an end table. I would also suggest breaking up the pillows. Keep three on the sofa and put one on each chair. If you can't move the tv, I would still recommend the same arrangement but swap the recommended tv and piano positions. For future furniture purchases, I like the idea of a sofa and two chairs also. It will give you a lot of flexibility to have different arrangements. I really like your windows and blinds. I would suggest putting blinds on the quad window too to cut down on glare as you watch tv and to give the windows a more cohesive look....See MoreStarting Over From Scratch, Help Please!
Comments (42)Jillius, my sister hopefully won't need to move in for many years. So really the main use of the 1st floor bedroom would be a guest room/play room. But I do want to fix the bathroom with a zero threshold shower with grab bars. She's not in a wheelchair, more just balance issues. I'm imagining having a Murphy bed in the guest room that could be folded up when no one is staying with us and then the kids could play in there. I also like having the guest room close to a door so guests don't have to lug suitcases all over the house and up stairs. To answer your other questions, there are stairs going up and basement stairs going down also. The basement is partially finished. It already has a finished bathroom, fireplace and lighting. Just needs a floor really. It's a pretty usable space for an old house, very open with about 6'8" ceilings I think. But the stairs were changed long ago to a spiral staircase going down. The spiral staircase feels very treacherous to me. We would like to change it to a regular staircase, but that's beyond our budget right now....See MorePlease help me put together our living room!
Comments (67)I've been playing with the SW color visualizer tool and came up with a ton of different schemes, but this one is pointing me toward an overall house palette that I really like. It's very "beigey", it isn't at all trendy, but it's very warm, looks a lot like the clothes in my closet - jeans and earthy tops :) - and just might work. If I want to spice it up, I think I can add or swap a gray such as amazing gray or intellectual gray into the mix to bring it into the 21st century. (There's a good amount of gray in the fabric already.) I know that the colors that the app generates aren't exact, but it's a good road map. Waddyathink? :)...See Morebrikar
