Tile experts - Help, please! Niche with marble shelf
Comments (13)DH here. Conventional wood framing, then hardbacker, which adjoined to the rest of the hardbacker that formed the shower walls. In other words, the niche is simply part of the wall. Warning -- if possible, frame the niche at least 2 inches larger than your desired final niche opening dimensions, and don't seal with Hardibacker, nor sparkle with thin-set, until your tiler does the actual tile layout measurements. Depending upon where the tile lines lay, you may want to add layers of Hardibacker to fill so that you don't have to notch tiles at the corners. Then, we waterproofed the entire hardbacker surface (walls and nook) using three coats of Laticrete's Hydroban product (rolls on like thick goopy paint, dries to form a rubber-like seal). According to our tiler, if/when water gets behind the tile (wall or nook), it slides down the Hydroban and exits into the tub. Had to shim walls to make sure the Inside edge of the Hardibacker overhangs the raised lip of the tub, so that water sliding down behind the tile exits inside the lip of the tub. Apparently, an alternative to shimming the studs is to notch the framing so the tub lip sinks into the framing by 1/4", which lets the Hardibacker's inside edge sit inside the lip of the tub. That also helps the tiler bring the tile down inside the tub lip without angling the last row of tile in to clear the lip....See MoreSeeking help with outdated tv/fireplace niche area
Comments (8)The first thing would be furniture placement in the room. Without furniture placement, you cannot decide where to put the tv. Right now to me the best place would be the lower right side of the fireplace, but honestly you need to place furniture in the room to make that decision. What size tv will you be working with. Are you buying a new tv? Are you using furniture you already have? will you be buying a sectional? sofa and chairs? what furniture best fits this room needs to be decided. So many questions :-) Post all dimensions, walls, windows, doorways. If need be draw it out on paper and post a picture....See MoreHelp decorating an open niche/mantel.
Comments (11)Thank you @grapefruit1_ar!! This is precisely the advice I was looking for... I decorate with a variety of Mercury glass Christmas trees, garland, balls, etc for Christmas... so I like decorating this area seasonally... Isn't that the fun of having a fireplace mantel? LOL. I went shopping yesterday and saw some cute wicker vases at Target (too small)... I'm thinking maybe a spring floral arrangement would look good or possibly a birdcage. I've been looking for an antique windowpane or a decorative arched cathedral wood frame that would fit... thinking I could stand it up instead of hanging it ... but it needs to be finished on both sides or I'll have to buy two lol. I have plenty of %&$ to stick up there... but balancing the height in that space seems to be my biggest challenge....See MoreShower Niche - Help! Unfinished tile showing
Comments (20)Nothing is going to last forever. The options being suggested are to make it look better without having to take the shower out and start over. Put tile trim on it? I would use grout to adhere it. So it doesn't last? It will still be waterproof and you just redo it in the future if it doesn't. Same with paint. So what if it doesn't last? Make it look better and repaint it again if needed. And yes, ask the tiler to remove the grout he added to the edges and if you decide to try tile trim in a picture frame style, ask him to install it or at least cut the corners in a miter so they will look more professional. I was just looking for a pic of what I'm thinking and found this! And yes it's not going to last, but it looks like the perfect solution to your problem with the least hassle and it will look better than now, if you can find a color that works for you. Dark to match the pattern tile could look nice if you can't match the plain tile. You'd probably have to use better adhesive other than the peel and stick because it's not designed to go in a wet spot, I suspect.
