Need expert's advice on using marble and travertine mosaic tiles
Comments (5)Hey Auzzy, Great question. The salesperson at the tile store near me suggested a mosaic of tiny marble squares for my master bath shower floor. I asked if it would be a pain to keep clean, and she said, "No, not at all." She said that the marble and grout would be sealed upon installation. Now, after reading the John Bridge site (thanks for the reference - I didn't know about that) I am worried. I didn't buy anything yet, but am close to needing to put the order in so the materials will be ready in time for the contractor. In my last bathroom, I had a tub, but on the bathroom floor there was slate that was gorgeous. I did have to seal it every 6 months but it was very easy to do. If that would be good enough so we can get our stone shower floors, I'd be fine with it. Experts?...See MoreShower niche shelf - marble or granite?
Comments (7)Originally I was going to use the same tile as the rest of the shower - Philadelphia Travertine. The width of the niche is 20" so I was going to cut down 2 of my 12" pieces and have a seam. Decided I didn't want a seam, and my tile didn't come in 20", so I decided to go with custom cut granite. It wasn't cheap. I got 2 niche shelves - 5"x20", a curb - 5"x36", a 12"x12"x17" triangle for my small better bench, and a thicker 5"x24" threshold for the bathroom door and it cost $600! which I thought was ridiculously high, but decided to get them anyway. I'm very happy with that decision and the niche, along with most of the shower is tiled, and looks fantastic....See MoreTile experts please HELP!!! 12x12 marble tile
Comments (3)I should have added: Marble can be tricky, as some of it is very porous, some can even be a bit translucent. Use a thinset that matches the color of the tile. Usually white thinset. That will prevent gray thinset from shadowing through the tile. Backbutter the marble tiles to ensure you get a full coating of thinset on the back of each tile. Some thinset here ant none there could also result in a mottled or striping look with the finished tile. Marble can wick water, so the after tiling it may have a mottled appearance for a few days as the thinset cures and the tile dries. Polished marble can be scratched by sanded grout. Depends on the care of the installer. However, thinner grout joints (less than 1/8") should lead you to use unsanded grout. A dark grout can stain the edges of light colored marble, leading to a "dirty look" aroudn the perimeter of the tile. Mongo...See MoreTile experts, please help
Comments (1)Generally a matter of quality. I personally don't like the 50% overlap. A third is far better in eliminating lippage...but some, high quality tiles have minimal "bowing" and a 50% is possible. A lippage control system such as LASH or MLT helps greatly in keeping things in line....See Morecat_mom
