Cambria Parys Installed Today - Lots of chips or nicks

Cambria Parys was installed in my home office today. I'm noticing a lot of small chips or nicks on the surface and zillions more on the front edges. Comparing to my kitchen countertop which is Cambria Montgomery, that does not have one chip or nick. I'm wondering if the fabricator botched the job and if it can be repaired. California Closets is doing the cabinetry and they contracted the Cambria work out to Pacific Stone.

It's the designer's call. The chip would bother me. But so would making the installer replace it. Looks like they did a meticulous job on leveling and joints. I think I would settle for a professional grade epoxy repair which would be durable and virtually undetectable ... especially at a 5-foot distance. (Crushed stone chips are worked into the color-matched epoxy base. After curing, the surface excess is ground smooth to conform to the cut edges. Done very carefully, of course, so that adjacent stone is not accidentally nicked in the grinding ... dental work.) While the walk is very nice looking now, it looks a little interior-ish ... as in prone to being easily damaged in the outdoor environment. You'll need to worry who does the edging and what with. If I did it with my metal blade edger, there'd be about 5 chips to fix after every visit! And they would be concentrated at the rounded interior corner!

Sweetie--fell in love with Canterbury the minute I laid eyes on it. Totally had blinders on. I looked no further. It looked great with the island (maple sorrel with a dark glaze) but after I saw the cupboards installed I knew it just wasn't right for me. All I saw was that sea of white cupboards and knew I had to put the brakes on the Canterbury. If you saw a previous post, the Canterbury was already templated and a week had passed.....All week I agonized and knew it was the wrong decision for me. I called the KD and the quartz was not cut yet so she was able to put a hold on it. Took another week and brought several more samples of quartz with white backgrounds home. I really took my time on this and knew that New Quay was what I was going to get when I laid it on top of the cupboards.. Of all the decisions in the kitchen, this is my favorite. New Quay has a lot of grey and white with just a bit of khaki. There are some tiny "diamond" chips in it too. You don't see that from far, just close up. For me, the Canterbury just wasn't right with the white cupboards. If they were more creamy in color, it would have been fine, but they are definitely white. I still need to pick out the subway and have been thinking white all along, but now am leaning towards a very pale grey. Oh, my floor also is a kind of light and darkish coffee color...it's an Asian Walnut from Casabella called Champagne (definitely not light). I have all stainless appliances so I like the blend of the quartz with them. To me, it's all very calming and I don't find it cold at all. I hope all you Cambria countertoppers get a cheese tray...it's a nice piece of stone! I know they didn't send it to me for a flawless transaction! They're probably still talking about me :(

No engineered stone is approved for UV exposure. It’s not an industry secret at all. None can go outside. Period. If your professionals that you worked with had done their jobs, you’d be an educated consumer and know that it’s not an exclusion just for Cambria. Direct sun from standard new windows shouldn’t pass enough UV to damage your floors, furniture, or e-stone. Standard windows already come with UV blocking properties, so if yours are so old that they don’t have it, you’ve got other issues about UV exposure in your house. Old windows need UV blocking film installed to avoid degradation to all kinds of interior finishes. Not just your e-stone. If it’s a relatively new window, that’s a conversation that you need to have with your window manufacturer. It’s defective. This is Not on Cambria. Or Silestone. Or Pental. Or Zodiaq. Or any e-stone manufacturer. New windows shouldn’t have issues with transmitting enough UV to damage your home.. Poop happens. This isn’t on Cambria. Talk to your window manufacturer.

I am a fabricator. "Brand has no bearing on chipping; it's all the same stuff." for quartz this is exactly correct. For the harder natural stones a well rounded edge provides substantial protection from chipping. You really have to whack a rounded edge to chip it. Occasionally, even in hard stones, an inclusion can pop out. If you manage to save the popped out piece the repair is simple. For other chips the repair is also relatively simple with the fillers and tools available to the fabricator AS LONG AS the customer has realistic expectations. If you follow Joe you know he spends a lot of effort making sure the customers expectations are realistic before he starts a job. For softer stones like marble and travertine chipping is a greater risk simply because the mechanical integrity of the stone is much less than granite or quartz. Repairs can also be more challenging as matching light colors or white is more difficult. A trick is to grind up a bit of the stone and use it to color a clear adhesive but you have to have a scrap piece of the stone for this to be an option. All that said rounded edges are much less prone to chipping on any material. A competent fabricator has this discussion with a customer automatically as part of the edge selection process. Here are two picture. The one with the tape has a nick in a "C" shape, white in color. The nicks are not really visually noticeable. I can fell them by running my finger over them. Roughly I would say 30 nicks on the surface and hundreds on the top and bottom edges.

Update: I called the Customer Care team. I found out the Jewel Collection is like this with needle size nicks. The sales rep. at CC didn't advise me of this. I don't think she was too familiar with Cambria products. Cambria offered to send out a Field Service tech. to make repairs but the nicks are so many and small, I think it would look bad if epoxy filed. They are not really visible noticeable now so I will let it slide.

If you plan to do any writing at the desk, invest in a writing pad so your pen/pencil doesn't skip with the divots.

I have a nick in my master bathroom countertop which is less then a year old. Disappointed in the quality of the product since I have never dropped an object on my countertop. Purchased at home depot and twas told there was no warranty for nicks. Very disappointed because I paid a premium for this stone and I was told it was strong and durable.

I believe it is standard almost square with slight rounded edge pencil nothing fancy. The nick is in the center of the countertop nowhere near the edge. It just suddenly appeared one day which makes me believe its a defect in the stone. Never was anything dropped on it . The only thing I could think is that it may have happened with cleaners. It may not even be a nick it maybe a discoloration in the stone. I can email you a picture if you provide me with an email.
