Houseplant poll
Comments (31)This is a great topic, I have really enjoyed reading the posts. When we moved into this home a little over 20 years ago the three front east to south facing windows begged for houseplants and through the first three or so years I collected every one I could get my hands on. Gardening was pretty much a waste of time becuase the run off water from the steets made our yard a mud hole or skating rink depending on the season. When my husband got that problem solved my intrest strayed to the outside and gardening. I love plants, I love to grow them. As my gardens outside grew my houseplants dwindled down to nothing. Once I got a handle on the outside gardening I started growing african violets....ending up with over 300. Through the winter this was great but come spring time and gardening time the violets suffered. I finally got rid of all but about 20 violets and only have those because of how tough they are to survive my neglect (btw...wick watering is the answer to violets thriving). Within the past year my house plant collection has started to grow again. DH built me a wonderful sunroom...it isn't completely finished yet but is fully functional and I just seem to be getting more and more plants. Some, like my miniature rose bush, the carnations I started from slips out of a bouquet, the hydrangea stem I rooted and my basket of hanging carnations are plants that were outside. I couldn't lose them to the cold. The rest are just things that "followed me home". It's nice to have plants inside again. I probably will from now on. Comments (60)Kim, Prayers for fast healing for you. Bon, Where would we be without our beloved OK Mesonet? It has all the most helpful info in so many different formats. I just love it. I'm glad Bill made it home in time to chop wood. Hopefully that wood will keep the stove fed and keep you all toasty warm. Maybe you coulda/woulda/shoulda been chopping wood, but we know that it wouldn't feed your soul the way that gardening does, so we totally get it. Your wind chill was bad and it was bad so much earlier than ours. The cold front didn't make it this far south until tonight, but we're plenty chilly now. Megan, If you need some time to just chill, then allow yourself to do that. I think when our bodies are telling us what it needs, we need to listen. With a three day weekend, you should have adequate time for chilling and seed starting. Enjoy your holiday weekend. dbarron, Maybe the cat and dog were just playing and neither is too much of a fraidy cat? I'm glad you got the car into the garage so you won't have to chisel ice off the windshield later. The plants don't seem as bothered by the cold as we do. I guess that's because they are out in it 24/7 and are somewhat better adapted to it perhaps. Rebecca, I hope the procedure went well and that you and your mom made it home just fine. Y'all, the models look like somebody is going to get some snow next week, but I do not necessarily think it will hit many of us unless something changes. We have an unexpected, last-minute bonus weekend with the older granddaughter this week as her dad is unavailable for his weekend with her. Well, his loss is our gain and we're going to enjoy having her here with us, though she might climb the walls a little bit without her little sis around to play with. Of course, we can do things we don't do when little sis is here, like maybe go to a more mature movie (something not G-rated) or to a restaurant that little sis doesn't like. Tomorrow will be just her day and she's already voiced her opinion on where we should eat lunch. : ) Before they called to see if she could come stay with us, I had thought I might do a little plant shopping or something tomorrow but I think instead we'll do something she'll enjoy. It still is pretty chilly to be buying plants, especially since the cold weather doesn't want to go away. I'm ready to do some gardening, but the weather isn't really right for it yet, especially with the persistently soggy soil. Dawn...See MoreFloof!! Waaaaay too early.
Comments (30)We love to decorate at Christmas time. My other favorite is Halloween but I don't put up that much stuff except for on Halloween night. I have an Easter wreath for the front door and that's about it for Easter. Same goes for Saint Patrick's Day. We don't put up more than a wreath but we still celebrate it usually by watching Harrison Ford's version of The fugitive. I was very surprised when my daughter said she wanted me to keep all of the Christmas decorations. I was trying to downsize so she wouldn't have anything to deal with but she vehemently protested. DS and DN are not interested in any kind of decoration Etc. So it all goes to my daughter. We store our Christmas stuff in one closet in the spare room. I was hoping it to get it down to half of the closet but that's okay as we would not use it anyway. The Easter Thanksgiving and Halloween decorations are all in one container and are in our garage....See MoreChristmas presents and treats
Comments (71)i certainly do not feel wrong for how our family celebrates Christmas Each family has to figure out what works best for them, and it depends on the family. Our extended family is getting large and unwieldy with all of our kids growing up and pairing off and having kids, and thank goodness early on in our marriage they stopped the stupid gag gifts. The ones my husband and I got always went straight to the Goodwill in the New Year. I also hated some of the terrible gifts my kids got from family when they were little -- often very noisy battery-consuming things, like a plastic hammer that said BANG BANG, and a stick horse that neighed when a button in the ear was pressed (I did surgery on that one in the middle of the night, much to my child's shock and disappointment the next day). One sil gives everyone in the family a pair of socks. Another of my husband's family members who lives locally gives each family a selection of homemade cookies. The sil who lives across the country gives nothing but sends cards. Another puts lottery tickets in a Christmas card to each family member. We have a farm, so often we give beef : ) . Two of our nieces have had kids in the past few years, so it's fun to have little ones to shop for; I've been getting board/picture books. With my kids getting older, and now establishing their own households, things are changing yet again. Plus on my shopping list I am down one girlfriend and up one boyfriend lol. Just to keep me on my toes......See MoreChiquit Brammall
